I’ve been a fan of this series since the first book came out. I find them very well written. Charley jokes a lot and is sarcastic. I particularly enjoy your interactions with Cookie. They both make silly comments back and forth that lighten the mood of the book. In that sense, Charley’s internal chatter sometimes mirrors what she has with her friends. She seems a bit silly to me at times and the jokes can be over the top at times. Although it seems to be a defense mechanism for Charley.

The series is progressing very well in general and I’m enjoying watching the story develop. I think Ms. Jones is doing a good job of setting the stage for future books in the series, but at times it feels like the books drag on with no progress being made. Reyes has said she needs to learn what she’s capable of, but he’s doing nothing to help her discover those things. Maybe that’s the development of the plot, but I’d like to know why he can’t or can’t help her.

Each of their interactions is packed with sexual encounters. It has been commented that they are magnets that attract each other, but there has been no explanation as to why they cannot keep their pants on.

WARNING SPOILER The biggest problem I had with this book was and is Charley’s father. At the end of this book, he arrests her for complicity in helping Reyes escape. First, let me say that I have a bit of law enforcement experience. However, I leave a lot of “creative freedom” even with author-written procedures. I can understand his father having some influence if he was an excellent detective when he was an officer.

The problem I have is that everyone seems to be following their orders, including the cops that are present. An excellent retired detective will no doubt still have an impact on current officers, but he seems to behave the way he still is and give orders that way. He had Charley arrested for screaming loudly. Who does this to your daughter, police or not, especially with no explanation?

Most cops would go to great lengths to keep your child out of jail unless it was something particularly horrible (we all know what that type of crime is) without helping to lock them up for decades. Charley’s dad wants her to stop being a private investigator, okay I get it. It is dangerous and she has been injured many times. But he doesn’t give her the credit she deserves.

I think Charley pointed out that he had no problem using her as a kid, but now that she’s grown up and more than capable of handling herself, he wants her gone and instead of actually talking to her. She pulls some strings and sends them to jail for conspiring to help a murderer escape. This is a HUGE crime and one that could land you in prison for decades.

I can’t see the logic from the parent’s point of view and it will be difficult for the author to write a convincing explanation of how Charley got out of this. It’s not as simple as “dropping the charges.” Until she’s indicted, it’s pretty hard to drop the case. Also, the arresting officers are giving her a week to turn himself in… I DON’T THINK!

If someone has been charged with these charges, whether or not the person they helped was guilty of murder in the first place, it’s still a crime to break out of prison, and it’s almost as serious to break someone into it help. The whole scene is illogical with no supporting information to bring it back into the realm of plausibility.

Ok, this tirade is over. That being said, I found the story entertaining overall and will definitely look forward to the next book, if only for a different reason than seeing the author pull Charley out of it. It’s a good book, silly but action packed.

I like the different kinds of paranormal guys (the angel of death, the son of satan and of course Rocket). The ghosts are always interesting, especially the guard dog that showed up at the end. I’m also looking forward to seeing what happens with Wong-san as I think he’s going to be very interesting at some point.
