This Present Darkness is about the spiritual war waged in the spirit realm. The goal of this war is to control a small town whose residents are unaware of what is happening around them and unaware that their prayers and spiritual beliefs will determine the outcome. In their reality they view the principles of Christianity as old school, with the pastor of a small church out of touch with the times.
The politicians have an agenda to free the church and the people from this way of thinking and teaching. To the rescue comes the journalist who has problems and doubts about his own spirituality and whether God exists for him or not. As far as he’s concerned, he’s chasing a story and not trying to be a part of it. As he comes to terms with his spirituality, he becomes a menace to the demons of the spirit realm who are at war with the angels of God. The demons are not playing fair and show it by attacking the journalist’s family and anyone who poses a threat to them.
Thank god for the spinster who is a strong prayer warrior for god. If the townspeople began to pray and strengthen themselves in spirit, they would later strengthen the angels in their fight against Satan’s demons and save the city before it was too late. The strong man is on the move and has the mission to take the city. Will he manage to conquer this small town for his master Satan? Will the journalist be able to really get to the bottom of this before it’s too late?
This is one of those books that, while interesting, starts out slow. It then builds and builds into a tense crescendo that explodes towards the end. I loved the pace, the constant building got me to the end of my seat, by the time I was two thirds of the way through, nothing made me put the book down!
The characters are very real and our leads are utterly lovable, while the antagonists are easy to boo.
Although this book was published in 2003, it hasn’t aged. Pretty classic thriller in my opinion.
I was fascinated by the angels and devils fighting for the city and the people. I really enjoyed the way people (with a few rare exceptions) never saw the spiritual war going on around them. At the end he was very touched when the believers from the city gathered for prayer. Which picture! This is very well written and also very biblically correct. I really can’t recommend it highly enough, it’s just a fantastic read.
A must read for anyone wanting to understand the universality and importance of spiritual warfare in an easy to read format! I would not pay much attention to reviews that attempt to delve into the exegesis of whether or not the accounts are biblical. It is Christian fiction based on revealed spiritual truths from the authentic Word of God (see Ephesians 6:10-12; Daniel 10, etc.), the details of which the author has taken artistic liberties to present in his own way imagination considered right.
It is not a question of whether there really are angels and demons bearing the names mentioned, or whether such a spiritual battle really took place somewhere in a small town; The point is that spiritual warfare IS real and the results depend largely on the prayers of the saints: you and I; the people whom God has appointed as his legal representatives here on earth. A phenomenal and entertaining read; I would recommend it to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the general dynamics of spiritual warfare or just enjoy an engaging read!
