t’s an offer they can’t refuse…if it’s real, but the stakes are too high to stumble into a deal blindly. As the East German secret police close in, someone needs to go behind the Berlin Wall to investigate the possible defector. It’s a job Deputy Principal James Greer can only entrust to one man: Jack Ryan.

Ryan is a former Marine and brilliant CIA analyst who has led some of the CIA’s biggest heists, but this time he finds himself in enemy territory with a professional assassin hot on his heels. Can he find the answers before the Cold War turns into the Red Winter?

That’s great! Know in advance that as he opens (and closes) the book, Jack is part of an incredible group of good and bad guys hunting a mysterious East German who stole part of an experimental plane that crashed in the Nevada desert AND who they are trying to meet with a possible defector from the GDR. In this sort of prequel to many others in the series, Jack is 34 and was pulled from his job in London to travel to Germany to meet the possible defector.

He’s just part of this team, led largely by Mary Pat, C/O of the CIA, and overseen by the mysterious John Clark. The FBI team in the Nevada desert has it in their hands. This jumps between continents but eventually comes together.

This is less techy than Clancy used to be (there’s some techy stuff on the plane, but that’s beside the point), but it’s also more propulsive. These are wonderfully drawn characters (don’t take your eyes off Elke or poor Ruby). A little quirk: The child taken out of the car refers to a boy and a girl alternately. Not a big deal, especially considering the scope of the novel. I’m a fan of Cameron’s Arliss Cutter series (if you haven’t already, you should). You don’t have to have read any of Clancy’s or Jack Ryan’s novels to enjoy this page turn. Great read.
