Rachel Blum and Andy Landis are only eight years old when they meet one night in an emergency waiting room. Born with a pleasant heart defect, Rachel is a hospital vet and fascinated by the boy, who shows up with only a broken arm. He tells her his name. She tells him a story. After Andy is taken back to a doctor and Rachel is sent back to her bed, they believe they will never see each other again.

But over the next three decades, Andy and Rachel will meet again and again, bound by chance, history and the memory of their first meeting, a night that changed their lives.

A compelling, warm and intimate story, Who do you love? It’s an extraordinary novel about the passage of time, the way people change and change one another, and how the measure of life is who you love.

I can well imagine Jennifer Weiner’s Who Do You Love being turned into a romantic film. It has the necessary ingredient: a couple who seem destined to be together, having met as children and having hung out together on and off over the years, only to break up and move on with their lives while they’re together secretly still longing for each other. I don’t really know how good it would be as a movie, but as a book it was a great read from one of my favorite authors.

As a Weiner fan, I expected well-written stories with charismatic characters. Who Do You Love is no exception. From the beginning it was very easy for me to immerse myself in the book. While the plot sounds familiar (again, it could be just another Hollywood romantic film), its content and story were not mundane.

Weiner’s husband and wife Andy Landis and Rachel Blum (“It’s blossom like flowers, not blum like plums”) were at the heart of the story and inevitably had to be charismatic and likable characters whose story and life journey, either together or separately, were the ones we enjoyed reading would. Suffice to say they were because of Weiner’s ability to create characters like Andy and Rachel who are likable but still human.

What’s more, she made them seem so different on the surface, Andy was a fatherless biracial boy living on the lowest economic ladder with his single working mother, and Rachel was a Jewish princess who was spoiled and protected by her parents because she was born with a defective heart and was therefore constantly in and out of the hospital, but in essence they had more in common than meets the eye.

Through their budding relationship and beyond, see how they view themselves, the world they live in, and their place in it. While the greatest story is a love story, within it is an exploration of how to find yourself and what (or who) you really want. It’s so obvious that Andy and Rachel have a unique connection and genuinely love each other, but it was interesting to see their breakup. And what I like about this look is that it never digs in and dries out.

There is no clear “bad guy” to blame. Everyone had their part in lost time and their own idea of what it’s like to be together. You are unaware of what you had and what you lost until time passes and you have the perspective that comes with time and experiences. Love was never questioned in this book. It always seems that when they are in the right place and in the right frame of mind in their lives, they realize that they are made for each other.

While the book doesn’t have the humor found in his previous books (it’s the main thing that made me a fan of his books), the charm and sweetness are there. The drama never gets to the point where it weighs on the book, and Weiner manages to maintain a certain innocence of his story throughout his writing. He managed to make Andy and Rachel so charismatic and personable that you wanted to know how their story unfolds and inevitably ends. The question of who do you love seems easy to answer, but as the book shows, it’s never as clear-cut as we think/hope.
