Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, an informal men’s club in a luxurious Adirondack hunting lodge whose membership includes some of America’s most powerful business, military and government officials. The club seems to be a place to meet up with old friends, hunt, eat, drink and talk in private about war, life, death, sex and politics.

But one fall weekend, the board of directors of the Custer Hill Club meets to discuss the 9/11 tragedy and what America must do to exact revenge. His plan is complete and he is on his way.

On the same weekend, the disappearance of a member of the federal anti-terror task force is reported. His body is soon discovered in the woods near the Custer Hill Club Game Reserve. The death appears to be a hunting accident, which is what local police report first, but Detective John Corey has his doubts.

As he digs deeper, he begins to uncover a conspiracy involving the Custer Hill Club, a top-secret scheme known only by its codename: Wild Fire. Detective Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, race against the clock and discover they are the only ones able to prevent the button from being pushed and chaos ensuing.

Nelson DeMille’s WILD FIRE is the 4 in the John Corey series. Prankster Corey, a former NYPD detective who now works in the city for the Federal Counter-Terrorism Task Force, continues his quest to save the world from the bad guys.

Already in the first chapters it becomes clear that DeMille did diligent research for this novel, especially in the field of nuclear weapons. The story is about the possible nuclear annihilation of American cities and the Arab world. It is instigated by a very rich but very evil man with the help of powerful people in the highest positions in our governmental and corporate world.

The evil plan is finally revealed to the reader in the just first few chapters. John Corey and his wife, an FBI agent, Kate Mayfield, defy direct orders from their boss and single-handedly try to prevent a nuclear terrorist attack. As in the past, John Corey has an authority problem and continues to work alone, dragging his sometimes reluctant wife (and boss) with him. Together, the couple bring sex, humor and personality to the story.

No different from Cory’s previous books, the book is interwoven with Corey’s know-it-all, witty lines. I think I have become more tolerant of this personality defect as it no longer bothers me as much as it did in previous writings.
The book has enough spooky twists to keep the reader interested. The last half is more interesting and engaging than the first part. I recommend wild fire.

I can’t imagine any man reading this book would make a negative comment. I’m a self-confessed fan of most of Mr. DeMille’s books. My only exception is Gold Coast, which I’ve read twice and still don’t understand. Unlike “Up Country” where the author takes us back to Vietnam through a pretty good plot with interesting characters, while in reality he took us to “Up Country” where he himself fought as a soldier in the Vietnam War. I got that and loved every page.
If you are reading this review to determine if you should buy this book or not?; then stop it, don’t buy this book, not yet.

Go to the list and buy “Plum Island”. There you will be introduced to Detective John Carey and I guarantee you will be captivated by this guy who acts and behaves in the way we all desire.
He abhors the political correctness that has permeated all facets of our lives, and happily takes the small step outside of the bounds while pursuing his prey in unorthodox ways that drive his superiors insane and other organizations with the envy.

Open a book and get ready for a fun ride with a well-developed character that we would all love to identify with or emulate. You will then come back here to get the next volume, or order them all to ensure a continued adventure with one. One of the best fictional characters out there. I don’t know why John Carey didn’t become a Hollywood hero. Or has Hollywood gotten so politically correct that they can’t find anyone to play the character? I doubt it though, Bruce Willis is still working, isn’t he?
