Anna Renee Todd, born March 20, 1989, is an American author and screenwriter best known for her After series. She began posting on the social storytelling platform Wattpad. The print edition of the series was published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, in 2014 and has been translated into several languages. The film adaptation of the first book was released by Aviron Pictures on April 12, 2019, the second in September 2020, and the third in September 2021.

In 2018, Todd opened her own production company, Frayed Pages. In 2021, the company evolved and announced its own imprint in partnership with Wattpad. Frayed Pages x Wattpad Books will publish the author’s future projects, as well as the works of other authors.

Todd’s writing was originally inspired by One Direction’s music and fandom, and singer Harry Styles is a model for the lead in her later series under the name Hardin Scott. She started writing stories on her phone using the Wattpad app in 2013 and posted a chapter almost every day for over a year. Todd has written three books in the After series on Wattpad.

The series has sometimes been compared to the Fifty Shades trilogy, as both series began as fan fiction. Reviewers on the Jezebel website have panned the series, stating that it “reflects the disturbing dynamic of 50 Shades”, as they felt that Hardin’s character “behaves like a jerk at best, like an abusive friend budding” at worst.

In year 2015, Todd announced that she would be publishing Before, a prequel novel that tells the events of After from the perspective of the Hardin Scott. Her next book, The Spring Girls, a version of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, was published in 2018.

In October 2014, Paramount Pictures acquired the film rights to the After series, to be produced by Offspring Entertainment (Step Up franchise, Rock of Ages). The film, based on her first book, was finally released by Aviron Pictures on April 12, 2019. Josephine Langford stars as Tessa, the female lead, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as Hardin, the male lead.

Todd grew up in Dayton, Ohio. She married her husband, Jordan, a US soldier, when she was 18, and the two moved to Fort Hood, Texas, where she worked at a waffle house and the makeup counter at ULTA Beauty. She has a son named Asher with her husband.

Todd briefly shared a mailbox with the Austin film critic Korey Coleman. Years later, she reviewed film adaptation of her novel After, though she gave it a negative review.

In 2021, Todd started her own imprint in association with Wattpad Books. Frayed Pages will publish future novels by the author, as well as works by other authors. The imprint was announced in November 2021 alongside the news that After would be made into a graphic novel, due out in May of next year.

In February Year 2022, the Cosmopolitan announced the release of Todd’s new novel to be published under her imprint. A rewritten version of one of her earlier works, The Brightest Stars, The Falling tells the story of a young woman named Karina who falls in love with Kael, a soldier struggling to overcome post-traumatic stress disorder after three deployments to Afghanistan. Two more novels will complete this series: The Burning and The Infinite Light of Dust.

Growing up, the girl quickly got acquainted with the game and became a master player.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Before due to my lukewarm feelings about the After series but reluctant desire to finish all the novels. Retelling is hard to navigate, and I’ve never seen the point of hearing both sides of a love story. I hope to hate it, or at least not like it, like I did with E.L. James Grey. I picked it up and thought, ok, I’ll hate it or hopefully understand things better.

Hardin Scott was never a character that I particularly liked, he was never entirely comfortable with his actions during the original run of the series, and while I understood his actions, I didn’t condone or approve of them. I don’t know yet, in case you were wondering, but I was blown away by this release. Again, I was skeptical that this would be just a goofy reimagining, the same story played out differently and done just for the money.

Before that, however, it’s something else entirely. It has the narrative aspect, don’t confuse me. But there was so much more to it than just a standard nod to Other Eyes’ original run. While it is about Hessa and her unhappy relationship, it does a lot more than I thought it would.

I didn’t expect to appreciate it half as much as I did at all, but it was so much more than just a retelling. Many would say that by going this route, Anna Todd and her publisher were just trying to capitalize on the enormous popularity of the series; It may be true, but Before solidified several aspects of After in a way that the original series never could.

It was so much more than it gets credit for, and in truth, I appreciate it far more than any other novel in the series. Because we see more than just Hardin’s interpretation of his relationship with Tessa, we see the lives of other characters that were in the background and then we see what happens after the final book.

That’s not to say it’s not complicated yet: After is, and always will be, an exceptionally troubled love story that you shouldn’t recreate. But with the release of Before, readers can expect to experience the depth of more than just Hardin Scott and his past, and how he came to feel for our beloved Tessa Young.

We got a glimpse of his thoughts at the beginning of his love story, that’s true, but we also got a glimpse of Molly and Steph, among other things. I feel like it was a lot more fun to learn about Molly than any other part of Before, and I’d kill for a spin-off based on her. Anna Todd, can you hear me? I’m asking you for a spin-off or something. I’m desperate!

Nevertheless.

Hardin and Molly are incredibly similar in how they deal with what life has made of them and I really appreciated seeing the parallels between the two. We already knew that Molly is a flawed character, but her brief narrative shows us a softer, more vulnerable and hurt side of her than we could have imagined, and I loved it. That’s why I want to see more of her: we see her as a real person and not just the original series version of the character.

That said, we see Steph before she starts college, and there are hints of how intolerable she was even then. I have no doubt that while Molly, Hardin, and Zed are redeemable, Steph is not. And I appreciate that because Anna doesn’t sugarcoat who she is or how she acts, and even though I’m starting to hate her, I appreciate seeing how she thinks about herself.

Before it was a pleasant experience and if you hated the series you will not like it. It’s probably just a quirk in my appreciation for this episode because I wasn’t that into the series beyond “it’s a train wreck I can’t take my eyes off” and that’s it. But this, this collection, shows us more depth and a little more potential of Anna Todd.

I loved! And believe me, when i am saying that I’m just as surprised as you guys are.

If you don’t know the series yet… After is about Tessa, a naive girl and what she experiences in the first months of university. Hardin is a disturbed young man who is fascinated by her. At first they had this confusing love-hate thing, but after spending time together, their relationship turns into something more.

Honestly, it was hard to get into the first book. The abuse, deception, torment, lies by omission, and conspiracies were appalling. I didn’t think I could get over it, but I’m glad I did because all those negatives turn into positives a million times over. Seeing someone like Hardin, who had such a dark past, brought to light by Tessa was the best part of this series.

If you The size of these books is intimidating…don’t let that put you off. The hours I spent reading and listening to the stories of Elizabeth Louise, Grace Grant, Shane East, and Jason Carpenter were well worth it. And kudos to Anna Todd for giving us a great ending.

I was so excited to read Book 5, Before. Getting inside Hardin’s head and seeing her thought process was everything and more. At first I thought, how could this change my perspective? How does this differ from what we read previously in the first 4 books? I was pleasantly surprised because this book gave me much more than I expected.

Getting the most intimate dialogue from Hardin was heartbreaking. You can see the confusion he faces within himself, the self-sabotage, the hate. His desire to be a better person for Tessa and for himself. I felt like I needed the little reminders on the pages to help me remember smaller things that had a big impact on his story.

Reading about Hardin’s past also helped me better understand how he came to be who he was when he met Tessa and why he kept beating himself up.

The last 10% of the book has to be my favorite. Get a chapter on some of the biggest characters and where they stood in their lives. I love, I love hearing about secondary characters. My only disappointment was that I wanted more POV of Steph and Molly. They played such a central role in the first 4 books. He secretly hoped that Steph had come to her senses and redeemed herself. Well, there’s always the future, and as long as Anna keeps writing, I’ll keep reading.
