Fans of the Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love Craig Johnson, the New York Times bestselling author of Hell Is Empty and As the Crow Flies, whose acclaimed debut novel starring Sheriff Walt Longmire received so much praise. of criticism as enthusiastic readers.

The Cold Dish, the first part of the Longmire Mystery Series, the basis for LONGMIRE, the hit drama series. Now, for Death Without Company, Johnson takes us back to the rugged landscape of Absaroka County, Wyoming.

When Mari Baroja is found poisoned at the Durant Home for Assisted Living, Sheriff Longmire finds himself embroiled in a fifty-year investigation into the mysterious woman’s dramatic Basque past. With the help of his friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and newcomer Santiago Saizarbitoria, Sheriff Longmire must connect the ghost of the past with the present to find the killer in their midst.

Sheriff Walt Longmire has a lot more humor than the TV representative and Henry Standing Bear, his best friend, played by Lou Diamond Phillips on the show, seems much bigger and more dangerous in the book. His weapon of choice is a tomahawk. Victoria “Vic” Moretti, Longmire’s second-in-command, has feelings for Walt both times, but here she’s more of a dirty mouth and she doesn’t seem to realize that Longmire deserves any measure of respect. She also doesn’t hear much from her dispatcher and office manager, Ruby. Then there is the dog whose name is dog.

Walt has a weekly chess session with his old boss, Lucian Connally, at the Durant Home for Assisted Living. When he gets there, the grumpy Lucian gets into a fight with one of the stretcher bearers who is trying to pull out a dead woman, Mari Baroja, who turns out to be the old sheriff’s ex-wife. Fifty years earlier, they were solidly married three hours before the bride’s four Basque brothers caught them and took the girl to her ranch. Lucian thinks someone murdered his ex-lover. When the autopsy results come in, it’s obvious he’s right. She was poisoned.

Who should now benefit from Mari’s death? He has three grandchildren, one of whom, Lana, owns a bakery in town. The other two, whom Vic and Ruby refer to as the ugly stepsisters, are in town for the will reading.
Then someone tries to kill people, namely Lucian and Lana. It turned out that Mari owned over a million dollars worth of methane wells on her brother’s land. The ugly stepsisters seem to be the main suspects.

Walt’s daughter Cady is also coming because it’s Christmas and there is a woman who is also interested in the sheriff; She works for the government as someone who investigates abandoned lockers and provides a lead to solve the case. Walt also has a new candidate for deputy, Santiago “Santo” Saizarbitoria, who happens to be able to read Basque.

DEATH WITHOUT COMPANY is so much better than the craziness you’ll find on the New York Times bestseller list, but the plot is a little hard to believe. This is Charles Nurburn, whom the brothers chose to marry his sister. We’ll never know why these Basques would plant his sister in a garbage ball like Charlie. He is a womanizer, he hits her, he gave her syphilis, and it doesn’t seem like he was Basque either. What did they have against Lucian?

Anyway, I highly recommend it. There’s a lot of cultural diversity, we learn a bit about Wyoming, which is said to be the least populated state, and there’s a lot of action. Somehow I managed to pick the second book in the series to start with; the first is THE COLD COURT. Tony Hillerman really liked that; he felt that he deserved the Edgar Award.
