Dan Chase appears to be a harmless Vermont retiree with two large dogs and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with on the phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don’t have multiple driver’s licenses, savings in banks across the country, or two Beretta Nanos stashed in an empty bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on run.

35 years ago, as a young army intelligence star, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly aid a rebel army. When the plan went awry, Chase acted on his conscience, with consequences he could never have foreseen. To this day, someone wants him dead. And just when he thought he was finally safe, Chase is confronted with the story that he’s spent much of his life trying to escape.

Edgar Award-winning author Thomas Perry writes thrillers that “almost go faster than a bullet” (Wall Street Journal). The Old Man is his latest standalone novel and adapted into a critically acclaimed television series starring Jeff Bridges as retired CIA agent Dan Chase.

Thomas Perry is the master thriller writer when it comes to portraying refugees on the run. His most famous creation, the Butcher’s Boy, is a hitman on the run from both the law and the mob customers who have deserted him.

When I saw the premise of “The Old Man,” a novel about a former military intelligence officer who finds himself on the run from a covert mission gone awry in his youth, I was eager to read this (Full disclosure: I’m a former officer of military intelligence).

Dan Chase is seemingly the harmless retiree living in the Vermont. A 60-year-old guy with a couple of dogs, his adult daughter called him “The Old Man”. But when he was younger, he was involved in a compromised operation in Libya in which he recovered $20 million that was intended to arm a band of Libyan rebels but was instead stolen from that group’s political leader. Little did Chase know that his henchmen in the US were content to let this corrupt leader keep the money as the influence payment to keep him in the USA orbit, but that meant sacrificing the rest of rebels.

Chase (not his real name) is shocked by this corruption and naively decides to reclaim the funds…thus putting him at odds with his own American henchmen. Abandoned by the US government, Chase “snapped the bag” and spends the rest of his life using his skills as an operator and living under false identities. He’s willing to pay back the money, but circumstances make it impossible, so he’s using it to fund his new life… and investing it so he can continue to support his wife and daughter, even as he goes through one emergency identity after another builds up. . Waiting for the inevitable day when someone, American or Libyan, decides to get revenge on Chase. That’s the premise…

The novel is all about what happens when corrupt opposition leader becomes new Libyan head of the state. And the US government, eager to please its client, is allowing Libyan agents to track down Chase and neutralize him in retaliation.

The description of the lifestyle of assumed and fleeting identity in this novel is a pleasure to read. If you’ve ever fantasized about such things, Thomas Perry gives you plenty of hilarious advice about Chase’s machinations as he roams the country. But that is the highlight of the book.
In order to make a story out of all this, numerous plot twists are made that don’t always make sense. Chase moves to Chicago, meets a woman who takes him in, manipulates her, draws her into his life, and then drops her like a hot potato. And we’re not exactly sure why, but it ends all sympathy for our hero.

Then we are introduced to the American intelligence agent who is helping the Libyans. He’s contractor who secretly respects the Chase (whose real name, we learn later, is Michael Kohler). And that leads to a few more plot twists and an unnecessarily long side story about this character’s love life.

Then we get a long and needlessly absurd backstory about the woman who abandons Chase while trying to escape. Apparently she has some sketches in her own life.
The novel then has a climactic ending in a strange land destined to fix everything. I won’t spoil it, but it felt too clean and simple to be true. It was a staged deus ex machina that I’m sure a lot of people liked. But alas, I found it tense and ridiculously forced.
I know Thomas Perry fans will hate my review, but this isn’t great. The premise is, and the elusive stuff is fun… but that’s a Perry staple.

Regardless, awarding those three stars won’t diminish Perry’s fan base or book sales by one iota.
I’ve even heard it’s being made into a TV series. Should. It’s a brilliant premise.
Recommended for the good stuff…if you can handle the mediocre parts.
