Neil Richard MacKinnon Gaiman (born 10 November 1960 as Neil Richard Gaiman) is an English author of short stories, novels, comics, graphic novels, non-fiction, audio drama, and film. “The Sandman Volume 2: The Doll’s House” is a somehow chaotic story: the two “past” stories sometime feel detached from the rest of the book, and some of the subplots take a while to get fully blossom. Also, I was a little confused by the sudden inclusion of some DC superheroes brought into the world of Dreams, even though their story is the beginning of a much bigger and more important one.
And as the story progresses, Neil Gaiman’s gripping style draws you in, filling these pages with gory horror, love, sadness and the occasional glimpse of the lonely lives of the Endless. His style, all glassy edges and lush poetry, emerges in some moments of terror (the Corinthian finally takes off his glasses, revealing empty tooth sockets) and some moments of warmth (Unity’s last dream together with Rose). . .
Likewise, Gaiman’s characters are a mix of the loveable and the terrifying: we see Morpheus as he has been through the ages, as well as his scaly, sneaky brother Desire (whom I’m dying to smack on the mouth). the hideous Corinthian.
