Diana O’Toole is perfectly on track. She will marry at thirty, have children at thirty-five, and move to the suburbs of New York City as she climbs the corporate ladder in the world of cutthroat art auctions. She is now an associate specialist at Sotheby’s, but her boss has hinted at a promotion if she can strike a deal with a high-profile client. She is not yet engaged, but she knows that her boyfriend Finn de ella, a surgical resident, will propose to her shortly before her romantic getaway to the Galapagos days before her 30th birthday. Punctual.

But then a virus hits the town that feels worlds away, and on the eve of her departure, Finn breaks the news: the hospital is ready. She has to stay behind. You should go anyway, she assures him, as it would be a shame if his non-refundable trip was wasted. And so she reluctantly leaves.

Almost immediately, Diana’s dream vacation goes awry. Her luggage goes missing, WiFi is almost non-existent, and the hotel she booked is closed due to the pandemic. In fact, the entire island is now under quarantine and she is stranded until the borders reopen. Completely isolated, she has to get out of her comfort zone. She begins to bond with a local family when a teenager with a secret opens up to strangers, despite her father’s mistrust of her.

On the Galapagos Islands, where Darwin’s theory of evolution originated through natural selection, Diana examines her relationships, her choices and herself, wondering if when she returns home she will have become someone else entirely. .

Wish You Were Here explores the previous world that changed aBrilliant and amazing. I pre-ordered this book months ago when I saw that it was about a Galapagos trip. I visited the islands 30 years ago and the memories of this enchanting place are still fresh in my mind. Unfortunately, some of the early reviews I read revealed the twist, but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of reading when the book was finally published. No twists were revealed in this review. This one covers the horror of COVID in a harrowing and compelling narrative.

lmost two years ago when the covid pandemic entered our lives. It deals with loss, grief, death, pain, isolation, resilience, hope, dreams, sexual identity, and art. It is well researched academically, but it also has some strong metaphysical themes. This emotional read brought tears to my eyes and I had to resist a strong urge to check out the final chapter.

Diana O’Toole is approaching her 30th birthday. She has planned her life well and is on a path where everything she hoped for will find her place. Ella has decided to get married at 30 and have two children at 35. Ella shares an apartment in New York City with Ella’s boyfriend Finn, a handsome surgeon. She knows that he will propose to her on an upcoming romantic vacation to the Galapagos Islands. Her plans for her future are right on time.

They will live in Upper New York and have a bucket list for future trips, children and a dog. Diana works for Sotheby’s in the art acquisition department. She has a new very wealthy celebrity client. Selling her prized painting will secure her a prestigious promotion at the auction house. What can go wrong?

It’s early 2020 and the pandemic has arrived in New York. The world we live in is going to change drastically. So far there are 19 patients hospitalized with the disease. Finn has been warned that despite President Trump’s denial of the danger, things are about to get much worse. When the sick and dying flood the hospital where he works, Finn can’t go on vacation. He tells Diana to go alone because the trip is already paid for.

Diana did not go alone to the movies or to a restaurant. Besides Finn, her friend and most important confidant is a flamboyant gay black man who also works for the auction house. He plays very important role in the story. Diana agrees to Finn’s wish to travel to the Galapagos Islands alone for a two-week vacation. This suggestion of hers definitely takes him out of her comfort zone, but she is determined to follow her suggestion and heads on her own to Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands.

When the hospital is overwhelmed with patients, Finn is scared, sleepless and very stressed. He is annoyed that Diana followed her suggestion instead of staying at her apartment to comfort him when he comes home from long hours on duty and the hopelessness of it all. He thought that she would reject his advice. Frontline workers like the Finn have shown the great heroism during the world pandemic.

When Diana arrives on Isabela Island, tourists rush to leave the Galapagos Islands. She is going into lockdown. Diana is determined to prove her worth by staying for two weeks. Her luggage got lost on the way. She doesn’t understand the language. Her prepaid hotel is closed, as are the shops and restaurants. Worse. Banks are totally closed and even there are no ATMs. She doesn’t have enough cash with her. All the communication with the outside world is unreliable and very spotty. She wants to confirm that she can handle it.

As she frantically wanders, trying to figure out what to do, a kind old lady brings Diana to her house. People are distant at first because she is an outsider and a tourist. As her two-week lockdown extends and there is no way out, they consider him one of their own. Little by little she becomes friends with the son of the owner of the house. He is a tough, charismatic man who owns a small farm and his daughter, an unhappy 14-year-old girl who self-harms. She builds strong bonds with these people.

He is looking forward to exploring the wonders of the island with his new friends. The wildlife, the landscape, the volcanoes, swimming in the crystal clear waters among penguins and sea lions. Nature is described in vivid and atmospheric detail. Over the weeks, Diana has become quite comfortable in her surroundings. Your time there is not without problems. She has written Finn postcards, assuring him that everything is fine and that she misses him. These were never released as she promised. She can’t reach him by phone.

She occasionally receives text messages from him describing the illness and horrors she is experiencing and her resentment that she did not stay home with him. She also has to deal with the news that her very absent and neglectful mother, a Pulitizer Prize-winning photojournalist, had died of early dementia in a nursing home while Diana was away.

She reassesses her life choices, her well-planned schedule, and her past hopes and dreams. She develops a new and different identity and tries to discover what is important to her. She is not in hurry to leave the island and her new friends. She one day almost drowned while she was swimming in the sea and was saved from the brink of death.

Then something very unexpected and shocking happens that makes us question everything we thought we knew.

I loved this book with its location, well-developed intriguing characters, unexpected revelations, unique plot, and thought-provoking plot. Some may find the description of the pandemic too disturbing at this point. Highly recommended for readers who can deal with intense images of the chaos in the infirmaries.
