Seeing some of these reviews saddens me, especially those who only judge the book by the ship chosen as the main ship… Rhorlaith. Even more special are those who claim that this ship was unexpected or out of character for both parties involved. I’ve seen books where that’s the case and this isn’t one of them.
They’re the ship that got the most development in the first book, so it makes more sense that they have even more in this book. Since the last book left a very isolated and vulnerable mark on Orlaith, it makes perfect sense that this same raw sense of guilt, trauma, and role confusion would take place in this book.
The choices you make in this book may seem annoying, but they are your choices based on the mindset you are in. When male characters make questionable decisions, we’re more willing to forgive them and dismiss them as morally gray, even if we don’t. I also don’t understand all the situational factors.
But when a female character does, we’re less forgiving, even though Bloom knew full well that Orlaith had discovered something about herself that was so traumatic and psychologically life-altering that it made no sense for her to react any differently. (What, did you expect her to be the same positive, naïve, morally upright person as Bloom? Please, if you want to read another book where the main female character is so static, humble, and inhuman, then I suggest that you’re going to stick with your average fantasy books, cookie cutters, Booktok and leave the character analysis to the adults).
In addition to Orlaith’s fascinating arc, we also get more information about other characters. Cain, whose narcissistic and almost malevolent qualities are becoming increasingly apparent throughout this book (and yes, they were definitely hinted at in the first book as well). Kai, who has encountered a match that challenges and protects him in equal measure. Baze, whose trauma runs very deep and invites us to explore. Gael and Old Hattie, whose circumstances and reactions to Orlaith’s identity leave us with more questions than we had at the start.
It’s also fitting that Orlaith’s character’s journey changes, as does Rordyn’s. With Bloom, too, he learned from his mistakes and tried to correct them in his own way.
And jeez, that ending. Again, it all left us asking for more.
If you’re someone who focuses more on character-driven stories, this series is for you. I can’t wait to read more about my two leads, Orlaith and Rhordyn (because…we all know she’s coming back, lol) and delve back into the rich and luscious world of Sarah in future issues.
