I’ve been a fan of Kiera Cass’s books for quite some time. She won my heart with the Selección series and stole it back with A Thousand Heartbeats.
From the moment I laid eyes on the cover of A Thousand Heartbeats I knew I had to read this book. I mean, how could you go wrong in a fantasy setting with the enemy-to-lover trope? And let me tell you, this book does not disappoint. I was drawn to the story of Lennox and Annika from the very first page. Although they have two very different backgrounds, Annika’s and Lennox’s backgrounds were very similar.
Both were heartbroken by the direction their lives were taking, but their sense of duty pushed them forward. Lennox and Annika are meant to be enemies, but fate has other plans for these two. And so begins an unforgettable and fantastic love story against all odds and the duty that their lives have imposed on them…
A Thousand Heartbeats is a fantastic read from start to finish. I really loved the plot and also the rich scenery. I loved the characters, the bugs and everything. I’ll be the first to admit that this book starts off a bit slow, but honestly, that’s to be expected from a fantasy novel. But I promise the pace picks up around 40%.
As for the characters, I loved Annika and Lennox. Annika may have been a princess, but don’t let her status fool you. There is much more to this girl than meets the eye and she is much stronger than meets the eye. And Lennox, 100% had my heart from the beginning. There was something about him that intrigued me. I loved his sense of duty and how desperately he tried to right a wrong. Together these two were meant to be enemies, and I love watching their relationship grow and change throughout the story.
In the end, A Thousand Heartbeats was everything I hoped it would be. I really enjoyed getting lost in this story. If you’re looking for a young adult fantasy novel with an atmosphere of enemies to lovers/star-crossed lovers, don’t miss A Thousand Heartbeats.
