She finds that people are not so inclined to support her, considering that she has been away for over 10 years, but in reality she has always been around with her sworn enemy, the late King of Adarlan, who acts as her murderous puppet when Cealena played to Sardothien. Many don’t take her story well, and many who find her find more reason not to support her than to.
Based on the Aelin we got to know, we’d think she’d burst into a vengeful tirade, she’d spit out her newfound firepower and stop short of becoming a tyrant. However, this Aelin is not there. She is becoming more calculating, less impulsive, and more and more focused on saving her people and her country.
Not only does she wage two wars against the Dark King Erawan and his aunt Meave, the Fairy Queen, but she does more than cross swords in these wars. She uses both her ingenuity and her strength to achieve the desired end result. From page one to the final result, Aelin orchestrated EVERYTHING. It’s that kind of intellectual sleight of hand that impressed me with her character development.
Prince Rowan, once Queen Mauve, now Aelin, serves his Queen in any way he can. When we first met him in Heir to Fire, he was dissociative, brooding, and not exactly the most likable character. Aelin has helped him transform into something more vulnerable, to the point where he will reveal some PDAs with Aelin in front of the others.
While some of her former cadre (old faerie friends/employees who swore by Mauve) would see this as a weakness, it’s actually far from the truth. Prince Rowan will stop at nothing to protect Aelin, even if it means protecting her from herself. He is still a fierce fighter, but now he has a good cause to fight for: a future with his queen.
Aedion goes through some pretty heavy transformations, mostly dealing with things that come out of the plot itself. I won’t go into everything, but Aedion is slowly coming to terms with who her parents are and what that means. As fierce as Aelin can be, he becomes one of her most loyal soldiers. He also finds a budding romance with a shapeshifter named Lysandra. Their relationship was very delicate due to Lysandra’s history. She has been sullied by many men, and Aedion is very careful with her at first, as he should be.
He was a very refreshing character to read about Lysandra. His ability to transform into almost anything was pretty epic. Lysandra’s fight sequences were among the best in the series and he reminded me of a mini Aelin. She is also completely devoted to Aelin, almost to the point of failure. It is a magical experience to see how a character so wild and brutal, shaped by sexual abuse, loss of power and a dehumanized childhood, transforms into a character who finally allows love to flourish.
King Dorian shows the biggest transformation in entire series. Fair warning to those who will be reading Empire of Storms, this will not be the same character they have come to love. His innocence is gone. His power is yours. The murder of his father by his own hand, the murder of the love of his life Sorscha by his father, and holding a Valg prince hostage in his body for months changed Dorian for forever. He is more darker, less talkative and more of a man of the action.
He has become sadistic and this leads to a very surprising (although I agree) romance with Manon from Blackbeak. He has become as cold as the ice he wields, and now he is a force to be reckoned with Aelin. After all, he is the King of Andarlán. King Dorian begins to realize the position he is in now, and you see him changing position when you least expect it.
However, he is very calm in difficult situations, especially when he tries to conspire with other characters. When he decided to speak, you knew his words would change the dynamic. I’m not sure I personally love the more sadistic side of him, what I love is that he recognizesknow its power. I’m curious how he will handle it in the future.
Lorcan, another fae man that he is part of the team. Also, the same person who tricked Aelin and Rowan at the end of Queen of Shadows into believing that he took one of the Wyrdkeys for the queen from him. He is known as the fae man who trained Rowan into what she is now. He is a character full of vindictive hatred, and it is amplified 100 times when he realizes that he has been deceived.
However, on a long journey he meets Elide, who is also on the run. Manon helped her escape from her uncle and the tower she was held captive in, and now Lorcan and Elide travel together. In short, Elide melts the ice around her heart and gives her a more worthy cause to fight. Her romance was the one that moved me the most because he really looked like something out of Beauty and the Beast.
Manon of Blackbeak has the most intense story of all. I fell in love with her since she was first introduced, and this new episode has only cemented that. Monon, still wild, but we see some big things happen to her. I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that Manon always knew something “wasn’t right” with her people’s lives. Some secrets are revealed, some important connections are severed, and Manon is no longer in a position of power. Until… that is… when she meets Aelin again.
At the beginning of this book, Aelin and his court travel north to finally claim his throne on Terrasen. But meeting several lords of Terrasen changes her plans when he discovers they refuse to acknowledge her as her queen. So instead of going to Orynth, he sets out to get rid of Hell and raise an army for Terrasen in the war against Erawan and the darkness of him.
What I liked:
When we met Manon and the rest of the thirteen of her in Heir to Fire, I was very upset. I thought her point of view made no sense. I didn’t like any of the witches. I felt that they were being unnecessarily cruel to everyone. But I’ve grown SO fond of Manon! Maybe She is my favorite character in this series.
And I thought the plot twist of her in this book was SO interesting! When we first see her, she is preparing to loot the Rifthold. She kills one of the guardians of another coven to save Dorian, and the second of hers must die as punishment. But she has different plans for her thirteenth than what is presented to them.
I love how much Manon cares about the thirteen of hers, though in general it seems like the witches don’t care about anything except going back to the desert and killing the Crochan. I love how they can communicate and how they take care of each other and it’s so cute. Although cute doesn’t seem to be the word Manon would like to use to describe her.
I liked all the action in this book. I don’t feel like things in this book felt really slow, I think they felt a bit repetitive after a while, but something was always happening and it was EXCITING.
I love all the strong and beautiful women in this book. They are all such fighters. I love how they keep the boys busy.
I think the other character that I felt less blah about was Aedion because he’s so loving and loyal and he actually seemed to have genuine feelings beyond lust, being angry about something or just being a little cold in general.
And I LOVE how things from other books that you wouldn’t even think to connect show up in this book. How things came together for this WHOLE series and you can really see some of that in this book and it frankly blew me away and made me wish I hadn’t read anything before reading this because I bet I would have noticed MORE! But before I read the last one, I will definitely reread all the books. I’m excited, what new things I’ll take with me!
What I felt “meh” about:
Aelin. As always, she is incredibly badass. What I always have of her and will always love. She is so strong and cares so much about her people, although obviously not everyone feels the same way about her. She keeps getting stronger and smarter as this series progresses.
But.
I feel like the descriptions of her power were so exaggerated. The parts where she delves into her power to take down an enemy just got overwritten for me. And there were several scenes in this book like this where Aelin or Rowan delve into the depths of her power and they’re all written the same way!
Another thing that bothered me about Aelin was that she constantly made plans and rarely involved anyone else in her plans. I mean, I can understand why, but at the same time, they’re there to help her carry the load of what they’re doing. She can lean on that. It was almost unbearable how every step along the path Aelin had planned had just happened and everyone was saying, “Waaaaaaat?”
Admittedly, I was quite impressed by the grand plan at the end.
Lysandra… I like it. I think he is brave and strong and can definitely prevail. But I don’t know, she was always there, but she was always talked about that she has different forms of animals and she wanted her to interact with people more.
Dorian felt so different to me. And I can understand why. He went through hell in Queen of Shadows, but he feels much darker and colder in this book and I still don’t know how I feel about it.
Elide and Lorcan… I probably swallowed my words like I did with Manon in Heir to Fire, but I didn’t see how most of his views were necessary for this book. I don’t understand how important his journey to find Aelin was. I think Elide is pretty badass too, but I don’t understand why I had to watch so many of her journeys.
I don’t know, I just wanted MORE of the characters.
That I did not like:
I think that might be in part because I’m always resentful that Chaol isn’t the object of Aelin’s affections, but I just didn’t like the romance in this book. In general, I have the feeling that Rowan is growing on me. I don’t HATE him anymore, but I don’t like him being with Aelin.
But that’s not really what I want to talk about in terms of romance. Normally I’m only interested in the sex scenes in the books. When I thought there would probably be some sexy moments, I was kind of excited. But I quickly went from excited to ugh because I was sick of the constant hugging, kissing, biting, squeezing, whatever was going on with Rowan and Aelin. I have a feeling there was more mention of pointed fae canines and what they nibbled on than dear old Chaol.
Seriously, EVERYONE in this book was like horny teenagers! And I quickly found it so old! With each step, Aelin and Rowan kissed and scratched and bit…
I can’t believe he’s saying he just wanted it to be put in his pants.
I feel like a good chunk of this book could have been cut, and it wouldn’t have been otherwise. I’m someone who finds repetition incredibly repugnant, and I noticed a lot of that in this book. I don’t want to read the words bluntly, incarnate or any form of the word lemon anymore.
