Bradley Graeme is pretty much perfect. He’s a star soccer player, manages his OCD well (enough) and excels in all his classes. . . except for the ones she shares with her former best friend Celine.

Celine Bangura is obsessed with conspiracy theory. Social media followers gorge on his opinions on everything from UFOs to holiday binge drinking, but he’s still not cool enough for the popular kids’ table. That’s why Brad left her for the mafia years ago. (At least that’s how Celine sees it.)

Nowadays there is nothing between them but petty insults and academic rivalry. When Celine signs up for a survival class in the woods, she’s surprised to find Brad right by her side.

Forced to work as a team to win a grand prize, these two teenagers must navigate not only the mud and dirt but also their messy past. And as this adventure brings them closer, they begin to remember the good parts of their story. But it’s been too long. . . or just enough to start a new kind of relationship?

First, let me say that Talia Hibbert is one of my favorite authors of all time. Her humor, inclusivity, love of geek culture and superb descriptive writing are a breath of fresh air!

Celine is uncompromisingly Celine. She prides herself on being confident about academics and on her thriving conspiracy theory TikTok account. However, her anxiety in social situations and trust issues (due to her father) make it difficult for her to break down her walls and let people in. Brad is a charismatic, popular, bisexual all-star football player with a heart of gold. He has OCD, which is much manageable now than it was a few years ago.

Even so, sometimes it rules your life, and you need to actively work to keep your racing thoughts in check. He’s also hiding a secret: he doesn’t actually want to study law like his father, but he’s afraid to tell his family what he really wants. Celine and Brad used to be best friends, but an incident a few years ago made them enemies. They’ve always been academic rivals, and now that a scholarship is at stake, they both enter an outdoor adventure competition and compete for victory.

Highly Suspicious And Unfairly Cute is a cute, quirky, funny and wonderful coming of age story. I adored Celine and Brad as main characters! I loved how Celine became the grumpy couple and Brad the brilliance. They are definitely one of those couples that could last forever if they were real people. Their connection is and always has been undeniable. Both Brad and Celine have great character arcs. Both learn lessons that feel believable, deserved, and natural. What if they take classes together? Magic. Fabulous. Spark!

The way Talia Hibbert speaks about mental illness is so honest, understanding and refreshing. She is a great passionate writer. This is not a simplified version of a YA novel. Hibbert speaks to his readers with maturity and compassion, never badmouthing them or making them feel less than. “What’s normal? What’s okay?”
I also liked the supporting characters and I hope we will see some books about them too!

While I really enjoyed Highly Suspicious And Unfairly Cute book, it’s not my favorite Talia Hibbert book. I think that’s because it’s a young adult novel and I have a hard time understanding what “the young” are going through now that I’m old. I can’t imagine being a high school student in the Facebook/Instagram/TikTok era. Still, there’s enough good stuff here that I could overlook it and actually enjoy this read. I found it illegible.
