This was an extremely emotional read. Tiger’s pain is palpable and fear leaps from the pages. Just when the sadness felt overwhelming, lightness and hope were introduced to the story, adding twists I wasn’t expecting. Despite being a young adult novel, it was a slower read for me due to the content and heaviness. Overall I thought this was a really beautiful story about family, love, loss, grief and coping with the devastation that the loss of your mother brings.
First off, How to Make Friends with the Dark is a book about pain. He’ll rip your heart out of your chest and throw it in a heartbreaker. And he doesn’t even give you a second look. you are allowed to cry Especially if you’ve dealt with grief yourself.
One of the hardest things in life is realizing that you and your loved ones are not granted immortality. I’m sorry. Death can just happen. Tiger, our How to Make Friends with the Dark MC can tell you. One second Tiger is arguing with his mother on the phone and the next his mother has just died.
How to Make Friends with the Dark is very well put together. It’s all too easy to slip into Kathleen’s Glasgow typeface and realize moments later that she hasn’t moved from bed in hours. One of my favorite parts of How to Make Friends with the Dark is when the writing falls into the second person and puts you right inside Tiger’s head; like everything happened to you It definitely adds zest to the emotional level of this read.
Tiger is going through a lot on this read; like ending up in a few different foster homes and discovering family members you never knew existed. His journey is definitely something and most are not happy. If you like heartbreaking reading, this is definitely the book for you.
How to Make Friends with the Dark also dabbles in the found family trope. What, folks, I’m a sucker for. I’m pretty sure How to Make Friends with the Dark has pretty much everything I love about a contemporary read.
I’ll make a hundred with you, it’s hard to put into words how wonderful How To Make Friends With The Dark really is. It’s extremely depressing and touches on subjects we don’t normally want to talk about. But it’s a story about moving on and navigating in the dark. I highly recommend this read, but don’t expect 98% satisfaction. It’s heartbreaking and beautifully written.
