Anyone who has read a self-help book on habits, discipline, or the Law of Attraction will be familiar with much of what is covered in this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of ideas and insights contained in this little book. Much of what is written here is covered in other books, but this one summarizes the key points and packages them into a handy, easy-to-understand reference. Daniel covers a lot of ground in a few pages, and while much of it was familiar to me, some concepts and details were new and very helpful.

Revelation
What I didn’t expect, but was pleasantly surprised, was the incorporation of meditation, Zen, Buddhist and Shaolin philosophies and methods.
As a Christian reformed after 37 years and now a practicing Zen Taoist, I know from personal experience that many religions are put off by these Eastern philosophies as false religions, idolatry and even evil religions. I myself have held these beliefs for decades.

It was only when I actively learned about these practices myself, instead of taking the teachings of my religious teachers at face value and on blind faith, that I came to know the truth of Buddhism, Zen, and Taoism. That is, they are not religions at all, in fact they are quite the opposite. It’s like never learning math as an adult because you’ve been taught that math is bad and the work of evil forces.

Anyone who can look past religious dogma and understand that these are not religious teachings or beliefs, but lifestyle ideals to use in conjunction with personal religion, will see how incredibly powerful these practices are. The fact that these are included in this book with so many other successful methods shows that Daniel has done his homework. There really is no greater discipline than learning to quiet the monkey mind and sit in silent meditation.

This book doesn’t cover everything, such as: B. The power of mindset and understanding why a “growth” or “fixed” mindset is essential to any success. Carol Dweck’s “mindset” is indispensable for this.
Daniel also doesn’t cover much about the neuroscience behind behavior change or why some people are more disciplined than others. Without elaborating, some readers might be inclined to dismiss some of this information as the opinion of the authors. But I’m not tapping on Daniel because I don’t think it’s necessary here. There are plenty of other resources that delve into the science behind the methods provided here for those interested in this data.

This book feels like a survival guide to discipline and habit change and I found it to be a fantastic little reference. I’ve already started implementing some of the new ideas. For example, the 40% rule keeps me very strong. I will definitely be using it in conjunction with other books and resources, as well as in my daily meditation. 😉

For anyone looking for a toolbox to find new direction and finally accomplish some of their goals or change habits, you can’t go wrong with this book.
