Madeleine Talmage Force is only seventeen years old when she catches the eye of John Jacob “Jack” Astor. Madeleine is beautiful, smart, and solidly upper class, but the Astors are in a league of their own. Jack’s mother was Mrs. Astor, a member of American royalty and New York’s most impressive socialite.

Jack is handsome and hard-working: a hero of the Spanish-American War, an inventor, and a shrewd businessman. Despite the twenty-nine year age difference and the scandal surrounding Jack’s recent divorce, Madeleine falls head over heels in love and becomes a favorite target of the press.

On their extended honeymoon in Egypt, the newlyweds finally find respite from photographers and journalists. Madeleine feels alive for the first time and is very happily pregnant. The couple plan to return home in the spring of 1912 aboard a luxurious new ocean liner. When the ship hit an iceberg shortly before midnight on April 14, there was no immediate panic. The fast and modern RMS Titanic seems unsinkable. As Jack helps Madeleine into a lifeboat, he assures her that he will soon see her in New York…

Four months later, Madeleine, who is widowed, gives birth to her son at the Astor mansion on Fifth Avenue. After the disaster, the press elevated her to the status of a virtuous and tragic heroine. But Madeleine’s most important decision remains to be made: accept the role that she was assigned to her or embark on her own extraordinary path…

As a long-time fan of historical fiction, I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t read a single historical novel about the Titanic until I read The Second Mrs. Astor by Shana Abé. The story of the Titanic is fascinating and will fascinate generations to come. The Second Mrs. Astor is first and foremost a beautiful love story between John Jacob (Jack) Astor and Madeleine Force, culminating in the untimely, nefarious and utterly heartbreaking events that began aboard the Titanic on the night of April 14. 1912.

The Second Mrs. Astor follows the life of Madeleine Force, a 17-year-old socialite, and how she wins the heart of wealthy, well-known, divorced (shockingly for the time) John Jacob (Jack) Astor, who is 30 years older than she. The reader can observe the couple from the first meetings to the courtship and the first kiss. We see all the trials and tribulations that their unique relationship brings.

Press interest is high and a frustrated young Madeleine must learn to eloquently handle it. Even after their wedding, the press is relentless and the couple decides to spend a long honeymoon in Europe.

The reader is delighted to see Madeleine and Jack fall in love and have adventures together. After their extended stay in Europe, they plan to return home in the hope that the press has moved on. And her journey home is said to be aboard the Titanic, while Madeleine is five months pregnant with the couple’s first child. Of course, we all know that the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. In case you, the reader, don’t know, I won’t tell you the fate of the Astors. But the anguish over the sinking of the Titanic runs deep.

Abé is a master storyteller. He uses descriptive language and eloquent narration to bring to life the story of the Titanic and the love of the Astors. Everything, from the decorative details of the Titanic to Madeleine’s feeling of her child moving in her womb for the first time, is told in exquisite detail, to the point that the reader can almost literally see the ship and feel the baby movement.

She beautifully and tastefully tells the love story of Jack and Madeleine, and respectfully and thoughtfully tells the story of the sinking of the Titanic. This book was an excellent read. I am so grateful that I stumbled across this and I hope that if you read it you will enjoy it as much as I did.
