But when America meets the handsome Prince Maxon, things change and she begins to question all the plans she had made for herself. She soon realizes that the life she has always dreamed of may not compare to the future she envisions for herself.

This is the novel that is the fruit of the marriage between The Hunger Games and The Bachelor and has a family. I found this book to be a different type of book than I normally read, but I found myself immersed in the story from the first page. This was one of the few books that I read in one sitting, and that was because it had a rhythm that kept you guessing what was going to happen next. I can’t wait to read the next books in the series to see what life has in store for America and Maxon.

This book follows the recent trend towards dystopian social novels. After the collapse of our society, a new regime rises to the top and transforms the US into a completely different country with a monarchy that controls it and a caste system where you are your class and self-improvement is almost impossible. The royal family has been conducting what they call “The Selection” to find a wife for their prince for many years. Princesses are always brought into an arranged marriage with another country, of course for an alliance, but princes had a choice. Imagine the TV show The Bachelor, only the girl gets a crown and a guaranteed marriage at the end.

Our Heroine America does not intend to enter the lottery to be part of this process, but to make her mom happy, she fills out the application and takes a photo for the selection process. She is a naturally beautiful woman but as she is being photographed she begins to think about the future she has with Aspen, the boy she loves, and her true happiness reveals her true beauty.

For this reason, of course, she is included in the selection. What follows is the typical sass and chutzpah you’d expect (especially if you’ve ever seen The Bachelor), but you also get to watch America’s journey to stay truly true to itself and not conform to anyone else’s ideas, which should do.

Our Heroine is sometimes strong, forceful, contradictory and flawed. She is not the perfect woman, but as a reader you can identify with her and bond with her. It’s easy to cheer her up, even with the silly mistakes she makes and the often silly decisions she makes. We are introduced to a prince who is completely insecure and doesn’t realize how much his people are suffering. And we also see a nation that agreed with this monarchy but now rejects it and is fighting hard for change again.

I don’t think the author is trying to make a political statement or urge readers to engage too much with our society. She just thought about this completely different society than we know and she tells us all about it.

To me, the best way to describe The Selection is that it’s The Hunger Games and The Bachelor, and I think if you enjoyed either of them, then you’d like this book. It has the same wonderful dystopian concepts as The Hunger Games but with a more playful tone.

This book is a modern fairy tale that captivated me from start to finish. It is not so easy for a handsome prince to kidnap a pretty girl from the harsh life he has led to pamper himself in a castle. Although I really enjoyed that part. It also delves into the intricacies of politics, as Prince Maxon learns not only how to lead his country, but also how to make changes and improve people’s lives from him.

What brings our main character America and Maxon together is a competition, similar to The Bachelor, to help the prince find his future queen. At the beginning of the book, America makes it abundantly clear that living in the lap of luxury is not its top priority. She sees this competition to which ue is cast at first as a curse, then sees it as an opportunity to do some good. She doesn’t want to be the next queen, but if she could help the prince choose someone else who would make a good queen, while she does some things to help her family, then she realizes the experience would be worth it.
