From the author of the extraordinary Vampire Chronicles comes a vast, hypnotic novel of four centuries of witchcraft and the occult.

Anne Rice once again proves her gift for fascinating storytelling and legend-making as she brings to life a great dynasty of witches: a family devoted to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy; a family pursued through the ages by a powerful, dangerous and seductive entity.

On the porch of a large, now faded New Orleans house, a frail, mute woman sits and swings. . . and the witching hour begins.

It first begins in our time with a sea rescue. Rowan Mayfair, a beautiful woman, a brilliant neurosurgeon, aware that she has special powers but unaware that she comes from an ancient line of witches, finds the drowned body of a man on the California coast and revives him. . He is Michael Curry, who was born in New Orleans and was orphaned in infancy by a fire on Christmas Eve, who has risen from poverty and who has now, in his short time of death, acquired a power of senses that baffles and frightens him .

As these two feel a strong attraction to each other, fall in love and set out in a passionate alliance to unravel the mystery of their past and his unwanted gift, the novel moves back and forth between the New Orleans times and San Francisco of today. to Old Amsterdam and a castle in Louis XIV’s France. A complicated tale of evil unfolds, evil unleashed in 17th-century Scotland, where the first ‘witch’, Suzanne of Mayfair, conjures up the spirit that she Lasher calls. . . a creation that means its own destruction and torments each of its descendants in turn.

From the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince, where Mayfair’s great fortune was made and the legacy of his dark power nearly destroyed, to the Civil War in New Orleans, as Julien, the only man in the clan with occult powers, sees the dynasty set foot in America The dark and light story encompasses dramas of seduction and death, episodes of tenderness and healing.

And always, through danger and flight, strain and deliverance, echoes of eternal war buzz around us: innocence versus depravity of spirit, sanity versus madness, life versus death, death. With dreamlike vigour, the novel takes us down tortuous and seedy paths into the present and Rowan’s increasingly inspired and risky moves in the ruthless game that binds her to her heritage. And in New Orleans, on Christmas Eve, this strange family saga reaches its amazing climax.

This is a very atmospheric read, mostly set in New Orleans. Of all the places in the United States that I would love to visit, it’s probably this city, and this book plays a big part in that. Mainly about Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon in San Francisco who was adopted at birth and begins to find out about his birth family after the death of his adoptive parents, and Michael Curry, an old home restorer who begins dying after a near-experience Interaction with Rowan and her Mayfair family.

I don’t think I would call this a horror novel, nothing particularly spooky happens, but it creates a rich atmosphere of danger, hinting big and small that things aren’t quite right with the Mayfair family. Both of our main characters are drawn fairly well, although there’s more than a hint of Mary/Gary Stu in them. Both beautiful and rich and educated with impeccable taste etc. The selling point of this book really is the history of the Mayfair family.

I’d say a good third of this massive book is basically a written record of it, with some flashbacks thrown in as well. Some may find it boring but I thought it would be for the best. Anne Rice really gives a sense of different times and places as the earliest fragments date from the 17th century. However, the ending felt a bit rushed, which is surprising considering the length of the story. It also leaves a bit of tension, which I don’t like.

Note that the book contains many explicit sex scenes, as well as references to rape and incest. So if you don’t like it, you probably stay away. While I thoroughly enjoyed it overall, I was totally captivated by the story and drawn in by the lifestyle portrayed. It’s quite melodramatic and far too long, but at the right time, as I was, it’s a great read.
