Colleen Hoover (Margaret Colleen Fennell) (born in December 11, year 1979) is an author of young adult fiction and romance.
In January 2012 she published her first novel Slammed. In December 2012, she published Hopeless, which topped the New York Times bestseller list. Many of her works were self-published before being picked up by a publisher.
Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulfur Springs, Texas, the son of Vannoy Fite and Eddie Fennell. She grew up in the Saltillo, Texas and graduated from the Saltillo High School in year 1998. In 2000 she married Heath Hoover, with whom she has three children. Hoover has a degree in Social Work from Texas A&M-Commerce. She worked in various teaching and social work positions before beginning her writing career.
In November year 2011, Hoover began her first novel, Slammed, with zero intention of publishing it. She was inspired by a songs lyric “decide what to be and go be it” from an Avett Brothers song, and “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise”. Because of this, she included the Avett Brothers lyrics throughout the story. After a few months, her novel was reviewed by book blogger Maryse Black and she was given a 5-star rating, and sales of her first two books increased rapidly.
Hoover published her first novel, Slammed, in January 2012 and a sequel, Point of Retreat, in February. They reached #8 and #18 on the New York Times bestseller list in August of that year. Atria Books picked them up and re-released them on August 10. A third book in the series, This Girl, was released in April 2013.

Please note that this is the third book in the series and as such may contain spoilers for the previous books.
The time period intersects the key moments of Slammed with scenes after the end of Point of Retreat. The present mingles with memories of the past, collected from Will’s point of view and told to Lake. It offers information and insight not only about their relationship, but also how the events in their life shaped them into the people they have become. It really felt like fate had stepped in to bring together soulmates in the form of Will and Lake. From the start, their connection was undeniable when viewed from Will’s perspective.
Such a beautiful and moving letter arouses intense emotions in the reader. Seriously, I got the heat and fuzz reading this book. It is the poetry in the narrative that captures the heart and conveys the depth of feelings that form the basis of this series. There is also a NEW poem in this book.
Every time I read one of Colleen’s poems in the Slammed series, it inspires me to create a Slam Poetry Library Lesson.
If you haven’t already figured out how much I love epilogues, the This Girl epilogue rounds off the series beautifully faint
If you loved Slammed half as much as I did, then you’re going to love This Girl.
This book was great in every way and captivated me from the start.
This was by far one of the best books I’ve read narrated from a male point of view. Colleen Hoover knows how to get inside a man’s mind that the lady can write.
This Girl is the story of Will Cooper; It’s set in the past from Will’s point of view, in the present during their honeymoon and in Layken and in the end he will be able to see his future. Even considering he knew his story after reading Slammed and Point of Retreat, hearing Slammed from Will’s point of view gave him a whole new perspective as there were a lot of things we didn’t know about how Will’s relationship was Julia, not once. Did I feel like reading parts of it again?
I loved the poems, new and old, always beautiful, always meaningful. These were always the parts of the book that I took the time to read and would read again.
I loved that in the honeymoon portion of the chapters I could always see how Layken feels and reacts after hearing Will’s side of the story. I won’t say too much about the story as I think you just have to read it for yourself as I know you won’t be disappointed.
This girl was beautifully written and there were so many parts that I had to reach for my tissues, I had tears of joy and ugly tears. When I wasn’t crying, I had a silly smile on my face. It was one of those books that I knew as I read it would stay with me long after I read the last line, and those books are my favorite books. I would say that this book definitely impressed me more than the last two.
So I’ll end this review for today with my suck and sweet:
My disgust is having to say goodbye to characters I’ve grown fond of, I will miss Will and Lake.
My sweetness is that after finishing this book I am more than happy with the ending, with the epilogue and with my newfound love of poetry.
My favourite quote:
This girl isn’t like any girl I’ve ever met. This girl is… EVERYTHING
