Minnie Cooper knows two things for sure: that her New Year’s birthday is an unhappy one, and that it’s all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she’s never met. Her mothers gave birth to them in the same hospital shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day, but Quinn got the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990, and the name Minnie should have it too. . With such luck, it’s no wonder each of her birthdays was a bigger disaster than the last.

When Minnie unexpectedly bumps into Quinn at a New Year’s Eve party on their 30th birthday together, she sees only more evidence that fortune continues to favor him.

The beautiful and charming business owner seems to have it all, while Minnie is about to lose her cake company and her home. But if Quinn and Minnie are from different worlds, why do they keep crashing? And why does every tense encounter make them both want more?

This Time Next Year is a heartwarming and joyous love story that explores how fate brings us to the people we least expect, no matter the odds.

Minnie Cooper and Quinn Hamilton are characters you want to hug and reassure them that their emotional and romantic challenges are a part of life and will get them exactly where they need to be…eventually. Connie Cooper and Tara Hamilton, her mothers, met thirty years before the start of the story in the London maternity ward, both in labor, on one of the busiest nights of the year for labor and delivery. .

There’s a prize, a big cash reward, and some glory for the baby born first on New Year’s Day (just before midnight if possible). Tara didn’t know and she didn’t care, because money wasn’t something she needed. She and her husband had a lot. Connie, on the other hand, needed and wanted the money as she and her husband Bill were struggling to make ends meet.

Tara had planned to name her young son “John”. Connie scoffed at this and told Tara that she had to think of a really good name and she told Tara that, whether it was a boy or a girl, they would call her baby “Quinn”. Suddenly, both women had a hard job and were taken away to give birth. Connie gave birth first. She is sure because her baby was alive and then she heard Tara’s baby cry.

It was announced that Tara had won the competition and that Tara’s baby Quinn was the lucky baby born on New Year’s Day as her firstborn. Connie was angry. She spent the next thirty years telling Minnie that Tara had stolen her name and that Minnie was just a very unhappy girl. She imagines the teasing children made with the name of Minnie (Minnie Cooper).

New Year’s Eve 2019 is Minnie and her boyfriend Greg at a party hosted by Lucy, who was Quinn’s girlfriend at the time. At midnight, Minnie suffers a series of unfortunate little disasters. Someone is throwing up on her beautiful shirt, so she shows up at the party in a tank top, even though the party is formal. They lock her in the bathroom (the story takes place in London, so I’m assuming the jargon) and from there the story will really take off.

It’s not just about Minnie and Quinn discovering their birth bond, it’s about getting back up when you fall, taking financial, career, and relationship hits, and still coming out better, even when everyone (Minnie) hides in that New Year’s Day. , year after year Year. It is about strong female friendships and the mutual dependence of parents and children.

Sophie Cousens writes in a way that captivated me. This is the second of her novels that I read and I love it, although this is the first. It’s the kind of writing where you say to yourself, “Just one more chapter,” and then you read four or five more. It was a quick and delicious rollercoaster ride of a good read. They will cheer for the characters even when they can’t avoid each other. The ending is sweet and finally answers the question “Where do you want to be next year on this day?”

Have you ever had a book that when you finished it made you sigh, hug and just smile when you thought about how great it was? Well, that was me after finishing this book. I’m generally a mystery/thriller leaner and have steered away from romance in recent years. But this book caught my attention on the first page and surprised me with every page.

Beautifully written, this story reminds you to love yourself, take risks, never take anything or anyone you have for granted, and never judge a person until you know their story. I loved this book, I highly recommend it if you are looking for a light and enjoyable read.
