Duchess Day Radley is a thirteen-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. The rules apply to others. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the mother of her mother, Star, a single mother unable to take care of herself, let alone her two children.

Walk never left the California coastal town where he and Star grew up. He may have become police chief, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound after making the statement that sent his best friend Vincent King to jail decades earlier. And he’s in overdrive to protect Duchess and her brother.

Now, thirty years later, Vincent is being released. And now Duchess and also Walk must face the difficulties that come with their return. We Begin at the End of Chris Whitaker is an extraordinary novel about two types of families: those we are born into and those we create.

Chris Whitaker’s “We Start at the End” shows how high school mistakes can tear lives apart. Walk and Vincent were best friends. His girlfriends were Martha and Star respectively. Two teenage but tragic mistakes ruin their romance and their friendships. The book is mainly about Walk, Vincent, Star and Star’s two illegitimate children, a daughter named Duchess who is 13 years old and a son named Robin who is 5 years old.

Star never recovered from the death of his youngest son. sister, suicide of his mother and abandonment of his father. He lives a hard life and will do anything to make ends meet. Unfortunately, men take advantage of them. Walk is the chief of police in his small California town. Martha left the area and became a successful lawyer. Vincent has served 30 years in prison and is set to be released when the book begins.

The book is mainly told from the point of view of Duchess and Walk. The Duchess rebels against everything adult and denies that she is a child herself. Her main task is to protect her brother from the harsh blows of life, especially given that her mother is an unreliable caretaker. Walk wants to help Vincent settle in town, but he’s an outcast. Walk is hiding a deteriorating health condition that, if exposed, could result in him losing his job.

A murder occurs, a rarity in the small community. Suspicion falls on Vincent. Walk has other suspects, most notably a local man known for his shady real estate dealings and involvement in domestic violence.

Mr. Whitaker’s title for We Begin At The End book is quite appropriate. Although the narrative begins with Vincent being released from prison, much of what happened thirty years ago and the years in between is slowly revealed by the author. If the book had been told in chronological order all of the mystery and suspense that I enjoyed so much would have been lost. There are also a number of funerals in this book, and at one of the most moving, the minister begins the service by saying, “We begin at the end.” Get our handkerchiefs and prepare to be surprised, disappointed and sad.
