With The Mirror And the Light, Hilary Mantel triumphantly concludes the trilogy that began with her peerless Booker Prize-winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Tracing the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who rises to the heights of power, it offers a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a bitter struggle between present and past, between royal will and vision of a simple man: a modern nation made of conflict, passion and courage.

The story begins in May 1536: Anne Boleyn is dead, beheaded in a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As his remains are forgotten, Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The Putney blacksmith’s son emerges from the bloodbath of spring to continue his rise to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles into fleeting bliss with his third queen, Jane Seymour.

Cromwell, a man whose sanity can only be trusted, has neither a large family to back him nor a private army. Despite rebellion at home, conspiracies abroad and the threat of invasion pushing Henry’s regime to the limit, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new land reflected in the future. All of England is at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as the wheel of fortune spins, Cromwell’s enemies gather in the shadows. The inevitable question Still remains: how long can anyone survive under the Henry’s cruel and also capricious gaze?

Highly anticipated and eight years in the making, The Mirror & the Light completes Cromwell’s journey from self-made man to one of the most feared and influential figures of his time. Played with poignancy and tremendous energy by Mantel, Cromwell is as complex as he is unforgettable: a politician and fixer, a husband and father, a man who challenged and defined his time.

The Mirror And The Light is a remarkable and entertaining book.

The 3 book in a trilogy about the life and the times of Thomas Cromwell. Raised from his beginnings as the son of a blacksmith/brewer, through his travels in Italy and elsewhere on the continent, to the heights of the court of King Henry VIII, protégé and successor of Cardinal Wolsey. Mr private seal. In second place after the king – viceregent. Member of the prestigious Order of the Garter, open only to twenty-five men in the realm. Earl of Essex, made shortly before his death.

The book begins after Queen Anne’s death and goes back in time to chronicle Cromwell’s life and struggles with Anne, his friends and his terrible life at home as a child. The book talks about the Walter, Cromwell’s father, and also the terrible temper he had and how he was quite mean to his children. He talks about his now deceased wife and daughters, his nephew Richard and his adoption of Rafe and his relationship with his son Gregory. His relationships with women – great and commonplace.

The pilgrimage of grace is covered. Next comes the king’s marriage to Jane Seymour, the subsequent birth of a son, and the tragic death of Queen Jane. The book further elaborates on the disastrous relationship with Anna von Kleve that was instigated by Thomas.

Thomas must walk a fine line between those who would destroy him (because they are mostly jealous) and the all-powerful temper of the king.

Thomas had a vision for the future that was far beyond the comprehension of those around him.

Mrs. Mantel paints a very real, colorful and complete picture of the court of Henry VIII in the 16th century. The reader wanders through the palaces and streets with the characters of the book. While he was certainly taking care of himself, he was also compassionate. He “saved” the people from the displeasure of the king or even from certain death. These actions proved detrimental to him later in his life when those who were jealous and the king weary of him rebelled against him.

It still amazes and baffles me (although it shouldn’t, having read as much about Henry VIII as I have) how quickly the king would turn against a person. Was it the blow to his head in his tournament accident or was it his bad leg that bothered him so badly that he acted so erratically? We’ll never know.
