Raised from his beginnings as the son of a blacksmith/brewer, through his travels in Italy and elsewhere on the continent, to the heights of the court of King Henry VIII, protégé and successor of Cardinal Wolsey. The book begins after Queen Anne’s death and goes back in time to chronicle Cromwell’s life and struggles with Anne, his friends and his terrible life at home as a child. The book talks about the Walter, Cromwell’s father, and also the terrible temper he had and how he was quite mean to his children. He talks about his now deceased wife and daughters, his nephew Richard and his adoption of Rafe and his relationship with his son Gregory. His relationships with women – great and commonplace.
The pilgrimage of grace is covered. Next comes the king’s marriage to Jane Seymour, the subsequent birth of a son, and the tragic death of Queen Jane. The book further elaborates on the disastrous relationship with Anna von Kleve that was instigated by Thomas.
Thomas must walk a fine line between those who would destroy him (because they are mostly jealous) and the all-powerful temper of the king.
Thomas had a vision for the future that was far beyond the comprehension of those around him.
Mrs. Mantel paints a very real, colorful and complete picture of the court of Henry VIII in the 16th century. The reader wanders through the palaces and streets with the characters of the book. While he was certainly taking care of himself, he was also compassionate. He “saved” the people from the displeasure of the king or even from certain death. These actions proved detrimental to him later in his life when those who were jealous and the king weary of him rebelled against him.
It still amazes and baffles me (although it shouldn’t, having read as much about Henry VIII as I have) how quickly the king would turn against a person. Was it the blow to his head in his tournament accident or was it his bad leg that bothered him so badly that he acted so erratically? We’ll never know.
