This book was A Court Of Silver Flames solidly good, and yet the whole time I read it there was something wrong that I couldn’t locate until the end. And I’ve come to this conclusion:
A Court Of Silver Flames book was a slightly downgraded version of a story that SJM had already told.

While some of the ACOTAR fan sites I follow have had people complain for months about how much they hate Nesta and how much they don’t care about a book starring Nesta, I had no problem with this being a Nesta story. For one, we leave Rhys and Feyre in a good place at the end of ACOWAR and the novel.
We don’t need another Rhys and Feyre book, as much as we love them. That makes what SJM is doing to them in this book incredibly frustrating. More on that later. I was very happy to have a spin-off book because SJM wrote such amazing supporting characters in the ACOTAR series that each of them could have their own book.
This is profoundly difficult to do and I have nothing but respect for her pulling it off. And Nesta was an obvious choice for this spin-off series, for all the reasons so many fans were upset that she was cast. She has flaws, her personality is snappy, and she often seems like a direct contrast to Feyre, who was so easy to root for. And yet…
And yet, I’d say that at the end of ACOSF, Nesta isn’t that different from Feyre, and that’s because SJM followed the same formula in writing Nesta’s story that he used in writing Feyre’s. While Feyre is an unsung hero before Tamlin finds her in ACOTAR, saving her family from starvation and protecting them when no one protects them, we find her in the opening of ACOMAF just as we find Nesta in the beginning of ACOSF.
They both hate themselves and try to punish each other for the things they can’t live with. And while it’s safe to say that most of us were shocked by Mater’s turn in ACOMAF, in ACOSF it was no surprise, not even to Cassian and Nesta, even though we spent all of ACOSF dancing around it, that’s why we all we know ultimately is the inevitable.
Cassian helps Nesta get her strength back, literally and figuratively, knowing that Nesta is her mate, but he doesn’t want to scare her with the news…just like Rhys, but in a less…executed way. , if I’m honest how it was written. In the end, she doesn’t surprise Nesta, who already seems to know they were friends. The thing we’ve built the whole book on is lost in that understanding once we get there. It was not bad. If she hadn’t read the Rhys and Feyre story before this one, she’d say it was really good. But we were here. We have done this.
Aside from the fact that this is nothing new, Cassian fell in love with me and I honestly expected more from him as a character. As Nesta grows and develops, she learns from her mistakes, her weaknesses, the way she hurts people, Cassian does some things that leave a bad taste in my mouth. On the one hand, Nesta is her partner, but with Feyre it seems more natural to be himself. As little as they do interact in this book, the relationship between him and Feyre seems incredibly more comfortable and loving than any scene we get between Nesta and Cassian.
I would say that he is more protective of Feyre than Nesta in several scenes. Perhaps the character of Rhys set the bar too high for my expectations of a matched man, but I also can’t help but think that after Nesta and Cassian had their soul-bonding moment, he would go away for a week and dump her. . Hey? I found it so intense that mating males couldn’t stand it if someone glanced sideways at their mate, and yet Cassian leaves Nesta for a week?! Either he’s a worse character than she thought, or the writing has gone off the rails here.
Frankly, the explanation she then gives for this behavior is incredibly weak and doesn’t fit what we seem to have been taught to expect from a “mated male”. And again, there’s a general sense that Cassian is a watered-down, less-executed formula of Rhys: the wise man who’s incredibly strong, handsome, heroic, and yet also selfless… except that Cass has moments where it’s easy not so good. as was Rhys.
Maybe I’m reading them wrong. Maybe that’s the point of the book that Cass and Nesta are imperfectly perfect couples who make more mistakes together and get back together because they’re a good couple. It seems like there must be a reason this story was written the way it was, so let’s move on because I have no other theories.
I can’t leave this review without saying that we didn’t need the Feyre and Rhysand drama. This story stood on its own without involving her. We only get one truly incredible scene from that subplot (Nesta revealing Feyre’s heartbreaking secret was very well written), and meanwhile, Rhys and Feyre continue to dominate every scene they’re in, beautifully didn’t serve is good too Reserve. It felt like a distraction. Something like, “Here’s one for people who can’t get over the fact that it’s not a Rhys and Feyre book.” And in all honesty, if you’re going to put Feyre and Rhys in a life-threatening situation, I NEED more scenes between them than I have. That just wasn’t satisfying.
Things I liked:
Nesta. I liked it at the beginning and I knew I would like it at the end. His character development did not disappoint.
The trio of Valkyries. That was unexpected and I liked it. He felt fresh in a story that was otherwise a bit stale.
Home. The MVP award for this book goes home. Who knows?! I loved this character.
The writing. I didn’t like how this story came about, but it was still beautifully written and the world building was rich and true to what was already established. I want more Velaris books and the other supporting characters.
Nesta’s story, which has been years in the making, is about a journey through something traumatic. The terrible things that she saw, did and happened to her in ACOWAR broke a part of her. She feels a darkness inside of her and she doesn’t think anyone really understands her, so she withdraws into herself. She tries to drown herself in self-destructive behavior. Her journey has been one that many can empathize with, in the sense that it’s one thing to be around people who care and want to help, but you have to be open to it. You must first understand yourself, accept good and “evil”.
Yeah, that’s Cassian’s story too, and I love him, but all I have to say is that it’s hard to take care of someone and watch them go through something tough, but sometimes it’s important to be there, and it can make more of a difference. about you think.
Yes, you’ll see relationships (romantic and otherwise) unfold, some great actions that will keep you on the edge of your seat, sexy moments, moments that will hurt your heart while others will only make you smile, sarcastic sarcastic comments, and a main character that develops in the purest Maas style. It’s a huge page turner and well worth the wait. I gave her 5 stars because she did everything she wanted/needed.
Is this book suitable for young people? This book contains adult themes and I would not recommend it for younger teens.
Who will not like this book? If you didn’t enjoy books 1-3, especially book 3, this is not for you. It’s an exciting book, but Maas has a certain style of writing and has stayed true to it.
What formats would you recommend? I usually have these books in multiple formats, buy an autographed copy of the physical book for my shelf, listen to Audible when it first comes out, and buy the Kindle version just because it’s coming out. This time I chose the Kindle version first because it couldn’t do 26 hours of audio.
It’s important to note that she doesn’t use the same narrators in this series, so listen before you commit to audio. It’s not bad, it’s just a matter of whether you want to spend time on it. I also didn’t like that it wasn’t synced to whispers at launch, so I couldn’t go back and forth. It’s important to note that fully altered and signed covers are not available, so you probably won’t be buying them in physical format this time.
Where does that fit? You must have read ACOWAR, but the novel was (in my opinion) a complete waste. It didn’t really add anything. You’ll get short summaries to help you remember what happened at ACOWAR, but you might want to refresh yourself.
