Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Strenuous hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but would be easier to digest if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, she was a mercifully underpaid federal prosecutor. With that job and her brilliant and devoted husband Sam, she had everything she ever wanted. And then, suddenly, everything fell apart.

No. That’s a lie. It wasn’t sudden, was it? A long time ago, the cracks in Lizzie’s marriage began to show. She was good at averting her gaze.

The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from a Rikers inmate asking for help, even if Zach Grayson is an old friend of hers. But Zach is desperate: his wife, Amanda, was found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach is the prime suspect.

As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda were not what they seemed, and that her friends, a close-knit group of co-parents in exclusive Brooklyn Country Day School, it was them. possibly keeping their own disturbing secrets. In the end, she wonders not only if her own marriage can be saved, but what it really means to have a good marriage.

My thoughts: From the beginning, we know that the characters in A Good Marriage will have many flaws, many mysteries, and that Lizzie will follow a winding road to find the answers she seeks. In fact, there’s also a bit of darkness in her own marriage, and she may end up having to protect her own.

As Lizzie tries to find alternate suspects in Amanda’s death, she learns much more about Amanda, whose diaries and descriptions make finding the truth that much more difficult. In addition, moving from one option to another takes them down very tortuous paths. Lizzie is our first-person narrator, but the narration alternates between other characters and witness testimony during the grand jury hearing.

As we begin to uncover who the culprit might be, we discover that suburban couples face yet another threat from an unexpected source. Their secrets could be exposed and to protect them they have to do much more to stop that person. But is he hurting the wrong person?
