After leaving his unsupportive boyfriend and being ridiculed in the fashion industry, Julian flees Atlanta for Savannah. In Savannah, Julian stops by his great-aunt Lulu’s house, where he spent his childhood summers. Julian is sad when he sees the state of the house and runs a stop sign.
He is stopped by the office Christopher “Topher” Carnegie and the two have a witty conversation, but don’t expect to see each other again. Later that night, Julian sees a familiar face at his new apartment complex and the woman, Harper, befriends him. She invites him to the family dinner on Sunday. In a twist of the fate, Harper’s brother is none other than the Officer Carnegie.
Three years later, Christopher is now a detective and Julian is Harper’s best friend. Julian continues to blatantly flirt with Christopher. Christopher continues to take it easy considering that he is straight.
A miscommunication on Julian’s part ends with the couple attending Julian’s sister’s wedding, with Topher accompanying him as his fake boyfriend. Three years of mutual respect and adoration come to a head when the two spend the weekend together in a one-bed pool house. Hello forced proximity! Julian and Christopher move closer and sparks fly.
The book emphasizes the importance of family, friends, fashion, music, and finding someone to support your dreams and encourage you. It has a lot of laughs and tender moments. Tailor/designer Julian has been in love with police detective Topher since the day they met, and 3 years as friends have only increased the attraction, even though Topher is straight and Julian’s heart breaks a little every time Topher goes. to a date with another person.
Unexpectedly spending more time together, Topher begins to realize that he may have more than friendly feelings for Julian and, for the first time, feels a serious attraction to a man. Slowly moving from flirting and friendship to more, both Julian and Topher are personable, caring, and though hesitant to admit their feelings, they communicate honestly once they decide to get into a romantic relationship.
Both Julian and Topher have depth to their characters, given their family, work, and dating backgrounds, which makes it feel realistic when they finally come to terms with their relationship, and their history of friendship eases the transition into lovers. Entertaining and easy to read, I was grateful for the lack of drama surrounding Topher wanting to be with Julian and rooted for these two characters who feel that being together is worth the risk.
