Do you sometimes find a book just when you need it? That was this book for me. I just finished reading an emotionally devastating trilogy and had the world’s worst book hangover. Enter this absolute gem of a book. I devoured this book in a day after telling myself that I only had to start one more book to get out of my crisis. I am definitely saving this book on my list of comforting books to reread when the need arises. Well, to get into what this book is about and not my fragile feelings.

This book follows Liz Buxbaum, an eccentric senior who is obsessed with romantic comedies. Liz’s obsession with romantic comedies is one of her only strong emotional connections to her late mother. Her father has moved on with a perfectly nice woman who is the complete opposite of her mother, and Liz is lonely trying to keep her memory alive. Hence her unique style and her obsession. After her senior year, Liz is struggling even more when her classmates celebrate all the big milestones (shopping for dresses, going to college, prom, graduation, etc.) with their moms and Liz worries that those experiences won’t be nothing without them of what was. especially about their relationship.

Michael enters. He was her childhood crush and left her when she lost her mother, so naturally she feels this is a sign from the universe that it’s finally time for their perfect reunion. romantic comedy. Unfortunately, Michael still remembers Liz as “little Liz,” the annoying neighborhood girl who constantly fought with her neighbor Wes. Now Wes is very popular, but he hasn’t gotten over his need to constantly annoy Liz. When Wes interrupts her “meet cute”, Liz realizes that he needs help to help Michael fall in love with her. Wes agrees to her terms, but only if she gives up the coveted parking spot in front of her house.

Of course, the jokes ensue, and every time she tries to get close to Michael, disaster strikes one after another, and Liz begins to wonder if maybe she’s misreading the universe. Maybe Michael was never supposed to be the lead in your rom-com after all. Perhaps instead of a friends to lovers tradition, he should have thought of enemies to lovers.

As I said at the beginning of this review, I loved this story and highly recommend it. I don’t want to say more and I’m ruining your chance to experience this amazing book first hand. I will definitely read this book many more times in the future as I am sure I will continue to read books that hurt me knowing that I can always come back to books that heal me like this one.
