It turns out that Stone’s fascinating new sidekick has some surprisingly familiar connections and some much more sinister ones, including an infamous foe who gets too close for his comfort. Prolific author Stuart Woods sadly passed away on July 22, 2022, just days before this book was published. But I take comfort in knowing that in his 84 years he has written more than 90 novels, most of which I have read in his popular Stone Barrington series (of which this is 62). I’m sure I speak for other readers when I say he will be missed.

As for Barrington’s books, the last few have been quite entertaining, although I did complain about the somewhat boring content of some (I referred to them as Stone Yawnington in my reviews at one point). And I have to say this one strikes me for the humor – yes, I laughed and finished cleaning it in about half a day just because I wanted to.

This time, Stone’s extremely efficient secretary, Joan Robertson, stars. For starters, she brings in her mother’s younger sister, Annetta Charles, as a client of Stone’s respected law firm. An extremely wealthy widow, she wants to make a new will, and the company has the potential to earn a decent amount of “rain,” as Stone puts it (she thinks she’s pretty much woken up since the last book).

She also brings Stone into contact with Annetta’s stepson, a young man she calls “Black Dog” because he is “too terrible” to be a black sheep. To say it was a nasty vermin would be polite; Unfortunately, it can also be dangerous.

As the story progresses, Stone (and Joan) do their best to stay alive, but most of the time the best they can do is play Clean Up. No one is safe, not Stone, not Joan, not even Stone’s friend and police commissioner, Dino Bacchetti. But despite all the suspicions, the jerk somehow manages to evade detection and be safely apprehended, even if it comes down to a murder charge.

Meanwhile, Stone and Dino don’t miss a beat, and they don’t miss many of their late-night dinners at some of New York’s best restaurants. Stone’s well-known penchant for tucking beautiful women into bed seems to have been shunned a bit, but that’s more likely due to lack of opportunity than desire.
