My excitement and anticipation of a new Brad Thor release has steadily waned over the past few books. The theme of Russia, Russia, Russia runs throughout the book, as does the author’s dislike of Russians. They are very weak villains as detailed in the book.

The recurring theme of scott meets a girl, scott wins a girl, scott loses a girl to death, scott seeks revenge, scott mourns the loss, scott meets a new girl continues in this book with his latest love interest and i think that third or fourth promised who will do it? he will likely meet his death in next year’s novel.

The book starts with a part near the end and then immediately jumps back to 72 hours before where it started, similar to many action movies. There is minimal character growth or team appearance surrounding and supporting Scott of the Carlson Group. They are used more as filler to push the story to the next stage of progress with little or no attention from the reader.

Chinese communist agitators are never really a big threat, nor are the settings in which they are written very exciting. There is no sense of a possible impending catastrophe or an unknown threat to Scott or any of the characters. The story doesn’t show many details about Black Ice’s communist Chinese technology, nor is it used in a scenario that threatens the life of one of the characters.

The only redeeming part of the entire book was the introduction of a man and former spy, with Reed Carlton playing a central and important role in the story. He provides the backstory to Reed Carlton’s nickname Peaches by telling the story to Scott. It would have been more effective if it had been told in flashback form, where it is written in detail as if it happened at the time. This would have given readers a greater appreciation and understanding of the character of Reed Carlton.

If you REALLY want the BEST of Scott Harvath’s story and Brad Thor’s work, start with The Lions of Lucerne and his first novels in the series. They are so much more exciting, captivating reading that you’ve missed several books now.
