After the death of my mother and her bonded, I was relieved to find my own bonds. He was sure that everything would be fine if he had her. The fate of our people is in my hands, and I know we’re better off alone. After five years on the run, I am caught and dragged back to face the men I was fleeing. I thought I was doing the right thing. Well I’m not so sure. North, Nox, Gryphon, Atlas and Gabe may never forgive me for this, but one thing is for sure. I will never forgive myself.

I’M OBSESSED. I DEVOUR THIS STORY WITH PREACITY. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so consumed in a new world. Broken Bonds is a compelling reimagining of the fateful companion concept: we’ve got a little magic, lots of danger and suspense, delicious love-hate relationship, a harem full of delightfully protective alpha males, a heroine I’m madly in love with, and a central mystery that I… kept busy. I’M IN LOVE WITH THIS STORY, my favorite J Bree book so far, and I’m not even a big PNR person, it’s that good!

I can’t say much about the plot without spoiling some spoilers and to be honest I have more questions than answers after Book 1. But our story revolves around our heroine Oli, a tied up refugee who is on the run alone after a traumatic experience. We quickly learn that this experience triggered Oli’s powers that, for reasons we don’t know, she wants to keep secret at all costs, a desperation that drove her to run away and hide from their mutual men: companions who were destined to love her, which she had yet to know.

knowing now she is 19 she was captured and brought back to her bonded community and is now forced to live among her bonded men and of course they are a bit grumpy for fooling them by rejecting them . . And it seems everyone has some secrets. Cue all the sexual love-hate and secret longing – it’s SO delicious!

J Bree is such an amazing world builder – she has such a keen ability to create an entire ecosystem of interesting characters, unique circumstances and dramatic dynamics that draw you in. So it’s no surprise to me that it excels in a PNR story. one that continues to unleash her creativity and daring as a world builder, as the humanity of her character is no longer the limit. J Bree beautifully does what so many Book 1 writers struggle with in a PNR story: she gives us the perfect balance of context and backstory without drowning us in story-crunching explanations and details.

In fact, J Bree warms up and purposely withholds the details from us: the story unfolds beautifully fast and furiously in the blend of tie-in drama, and I was hooked from page one. Along the way, it builds and deepens our understanding of this world’s infrastructure and canon, but only if and when we need it. It keeps the story engaging and focused while building this largest, super engaging, and incredibly original tight-knit community.

J Bree also stays true to what I love most about her writing: her original, flawed, and hugely engaging characters. This is definitely my favorite cast of characters he’s written to date (pssst – don’t tell Lips or Avery), and I’m in love with every single one. Oli is an amazing heroine and I’m obsessed with her. Because she’s our only vantage point, J Bree gives her this dimension: she’s altruistic and humble, tenacious and adaptable, incredibly kind and empathetic, and strong-willed despite having a bleeding vulnerability toward her.

She has some hurt, repressed pain, loss and sadness that permeates her character, which makes her such a rich heroine. She is often at odds with herself and tries desperately to protect others, at great cost to herself. I admire her so much and want her to be loved and safe. She has that wickedness, a trait we like about J Bree’s characters, but I found her to be more nuanced and softer (less lips, more Avery) than some of the others, and I appreciated that thing about her. She’s a quite emotionally open character internally, even she doesn’t express it.

I felt so connected to her that I cried twice in the first few chapters alone, from sadness and then from frustration. And his 5 teammates (North, Nox, Gabe, Gryphon, and Atlas) are the delicious Alpha Man candy I crave. Everyone has their own special role, of course, and they are all mysteries. They all have blackout and alpha hole within them, albeit to varying degrees. Be aware that they will frustrate and anger you – these are powerful men who punish Oli for what they see as treason, and while they stand up for her when it counts, this isn’t (yet, at least). sweet romance.

Most guys are tough and stubborn, lots of haters/gangster vibes. But they’re all such dreamers in their own way (well, except for Nox, I’m still mad at him). Almost everyone has at least one moment where we see the lover they could be, and I can’t wait to get there.

The only downside is that it’s a SLOW BURN. Get ready for the epic blue lady balls. While these Alpha Males are super protective Alphas and clearly want her, they also have a lot of pent-up anger and frustration at being left and they want to make her suffer. And although Oli finds her men irresistible, she’s determined not to break ties with them because she believes he’s a danger, so the result is basically a story full of sexual tension without satisfaction. Lots of prep chemistry and steam, but the actual steam minus a flash at the end isn’t even a YA level.

We’ll get there and it’ll be explosive, but now prepare to get hot and bothered and have to wait. I also hope that we will have future stories that contain some chapters from the boys’ point of view. I really appreciated not having them in this story because it created mystery and emotional tension, but now I’m desperate to get inside their heads.

I couldn’t put it down, I read it in one sitting and literally screamed when it finished. Our ending was not only epically entertaining but changed these characters tremendously and I’m excited to see what happens next to see how the dynamic changes as a result of the climax in the ending for our amazing heroine Lucky Meeting. the love and support you deserve. Brava J Bree: This is a master class in engaging and emotional storytelling and I am obsessed with it.

Oleander has been on the run for five years since a car accident killed his entire family. The Resistance is after her and she can’t afford to get caught again.

But running away from everything also meant running away from your bonds. The five men who were destined to love her. She has never met them, but the tests have never failed.

Eventually, the TacTeam finds her and takes her to the men she was running from. The men they now hate for being abandoned. Men who believe he ran for selfish reasons and don’t think to question anything else.

Everyone is to complete their bonds sexually, and then each of their gifts will grow and improve. Oli’s power is too dark, too dangerous, so he refuses to bond with any of them for fear of developing his own power.

This has huge potential as a reverse harem! Oli has incredible control over their bond and gift she manages to fight him no matter how hard he pulls her when she’s around one of the boys.

He’s so scared of being the monster that he thinks he might reduce his power as much as possible and make everyone believe that he actually has no power at all.

The book flew by quite fast as I was so engrossed in the story. This series is definitely going to be a must-watch because I just have to know what happens next!

There were a few minor grammatical errors that could have been avoided with a more thorough edit, but the writing is engaging enough that it doesn’t detract from the experience as it normally would.

I’m very new to the world of fantasy/PNR and this is only my third book in this genre that I’ve read and while all three were slow in my opinion, this book is miles ahead of the rest and these are mine Reasons. :

  1. There are no chapters on building multiple worlds, this has the potential to quickly make a boring book in my opinion. This book is expertly written and all aspects of world building are PERFECTLY woven between character development and relationship, it’s not pushy at all making it perfect for a beginner like me
  2. It’s over 400 pages and there are almost 0 racy scenes but with all the sexual tension and angst in this book it didn’t feel slow at all – brilliant!
  3. This book is packed with character interactions and what I mean by that is that it’s not just filled with FMC’s internal monologue, it’s packed with direct interactions with major and minor characters and conversations that kept me hooked from start to finish and have fascinated. Last sentence.
  4. The Harem: My lord, the Draven brothers. I want to gouge their eyes out with matches, but at the same time secretly hope for their redemption (characters one hates to love). Gabriel he has his moments but his heart is in the right place and I love him for that Atlas is perfection, from his physical appearance to his youthful charm and fierce protection and last but not least (my) Gryphon the character Cold at first and callous but as the story progresses he becomes my absolute favorite, his calm demeanor but the promise of “more than meets the eye” is amazing

Honestly, this book is perfect and easily makes it my all-time favorite category.
