This is one of those books where I kept thinking, “What is this all about?” Yes, it’s about guys fighting, but that’s not REALLY about it. Some reviewers seem to think it’s about the rise of masculine culture, or that only men will understand, that the author hates women, or some other weird (to me) theory.

What I think I took with me was disappointment, superficiality, consumerism, cynicism, fear, confusion, repression, humor, love, religion… and fighting for their rules. So just a few things. I think it’s important to remember that this book, this story, this movie once didn’t exist and someone thought of it in his imagination, and that’s impressive when you think about it.

In his first book, Chuck Palahniuk proves to be the most visionary satirist of his generation. The estranged narrator of Fight Club leaves the mediocre job of him when he falls under the spell of Tyler Durden, an enigmatic young man who organizes secret boxing matches in bar basements. There, 2 men fight “as long as it really takes”. This is a delightfully original work that uncovers the darkness at the center of our modern world.

I chose to read this book as if I had never seen the movie and will write my review as such. What the hell did I just read? This book was insane from start to finish. The writing is flawless and the story is dark, sordid and insane. It’s awkward at times, but not enough to make you stop reading. No, you definitely want to finish it just to see what the heck happens at the end. How could this story end?

The narrator hates his life, hates his job, hates basically everything. Wherever he goes, he waits for something bad to happen that will wipe him out. He suffers from insomnia. He goes to various support groups to feel better about his life. One day he meets Tyler Durden and then his whole life really changes. Tyler is clearly crazy, but he’s so charming that you can’t help but do what he says. Until Tyler gets too crazy and the Storyteller’s entire life falls apart. Maybe not everything is as it seems?

While I did enjoy the story overall, it’s mostly due to the writing style. I didn’t like the narrator at all. I think he is irritable and conceited. We understand that you hate your life. Do something about it. Don’t complain. It’s not up to “the man” to change your life, and it’s not his fault that you’re a failure. Going through life creating destruction will not make your life any better.

This book is definitely not for the faint of heart or stomach. If you are a bit sensitive, this book is probably not for you. But if you like a dark story with a very unreliable narrator, this might be the story for you. I said the writing is amazing. The structure of the story is great. It’s really a super interesting concept.
