Elder Ojibwe medicine man Henry Meloux had a vision of his death. Wandering alone in the Northwoods, he attempts to peacefully prepare for the end of his long life. But peace is bound to elude him as hunters fill the forest in search of a woman named Dolores Morriseau, a stranger who came to the Healer for protection and the gift of wisdom from her.

Meloux leads this stranger and his great-niece, Cork O’Connor’s wife, to safety deep in the Boundary Waters, his home for over a century. On his final journey to this beloved land, Meloux must do his best to outwit the deadly mercenaries that follow him.

Desperate, Cork begins to track down the killers, but his own skills as a hunter are put to the test by nightfall and a blizzard at the end of the season. Henry Meloux has walked this earth for over a hundred years, and while residing in harsh, peaceful, and quiet forested Minnesota, the Ojibwe healer still dedicates himself to those who come in search of wisdom, liberation, and a new way forward. Cork’s son Stephen had visions of what appears to be the old man’s death, as did he, so Henry had been preparing for this final journey for some time. When a woman named Dolores Morriseau asks Henry for help, she brings deadly trouble to her secluded cabin.

Henry, his niece Rainy, who is Cork’s wife, and Dolores must flee to the vast area known as the Boundary Waters, using all their skill, care, and judgment to prevent evil-minded men in Sinn from kidnapping Dolores and leave no witnesses. .

Despite his old age, Henry is able to lead miscreants on an elusive hunt, though one of them is a Native American tracker who pits his considerable skills against Henry’s lifelong learning. On this journey, the tracker LaLoup experiences his own spiritual awakening, which could lead to a very different outcome than originally intended.

Back in his hometown of Aurora, after Cork realizes what’s going on, he coordinates with the local police and then Dolore’s brother-in-law to track down his family and those with bad intentions. The vast expanses of the Boundary Waters will require all of Cork’s skills, many of which were taught by Henry, to find his loved ones before it’s too late.

Cork is a man of fear, guilt and doubt, which hampers his efforts but doesn’t stop him from giving his all. Stephen joins the search elsewhere, trying to find Dolores’s estranged husband who has disappeared and seems to be at the center of the whole problem. he is involved in something much bigger than a personal matter.

This story is told from multiple points of view, including Cork, Henry, Stephen, Rainy, and LaLoup the Tracker. In Book #19 of this long-running series, readers will know what to expect; This particular book is a very intense journey from beginning to end. Longtime fans in particular will be quite intrigued but still scared to learn if this is the prophesied end for beloved Henry Meloux. Mr. Krueger is as reticent as Henry himself when it comes to revealing facts and telling stories.

Dolores, a young woman, asks Ojibwe medicine man Henry Meloux and Ella’s niece Rainy de Ella to help her understand the problems she has with her husband. He is lost and when he breaks up with her she wants to learn to accept him but when he needs help she wants to help him. Cork then arrives at the cabins to tell Ella’s wife Rainy and Meloux that the woman’s husband is looking for her. But no, he is not her husband, he is one of a group of mercenaries trying to find the husband through his wife.

Meloux is now over 100 years old. But he wanders around the desert every day and sometimes he doesn’t come back to the cabin for days. As old as Meloux is, he too is more than willing to take Rainy and Dolores into the desert to escape the men who are after them.

An old man like that shouldn’t be able to outrun these mercenaries, especially since they have an experienced tracker with them. But Meloux doesn’t use his body to escape from men, he uses all the knowledge he has accumulated over the last century. And he has Rainy with him, a former nurse and a woman who learned a lot from Henry.

Boundary Waters played a huge role in this series and Cork knows Boundary Waters too. His father, his mentor Sam and Meloux have shared it with him over the years. Now he and the missing man’s brother are harassing the men who are harassing his wife Dolores and Meloux, not knowing why these men love Dolores and her husband. There is much more to the story and it takes us to various places to introduce us to some new characters that I hope will be a part of the series in the future.
