~REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS~

I’m not even sure from where to start with this review. This was my first Armentrout book and I started it knowing that a lot of my critics liked his work and didn’t like his writing style. That is all. When this book was released in late March 2020, I stumbled across it while searching for Kindle titles and had no idea it was a surprise release. I bought it because it sounded quite interesting.

When I started reading, I must admit that I was quite confused about some aspects of the story. Sure, there were plenty of common fantasy elements that we’ve come to know and love (mostly), but almost every page mentions a group called the Ascended. Well, I don’t know about you, but when something comes up so often, I want to know what it says.

However, the Ascended are that kind of mystery. They are told that only certain people can go from boring old men to promoted, and then those people live abnormally long lives. But that’s it. Only towards the end of the book does the reader really learn what these Ascended Beings are. The reveal is not unexpected, but it is exciting.

And oh, the way Armentrout wrote, that warmed my soul.

While I, as a reader, have been left in the dark about these beings, we find that our first-person narrator, Poppy, is also in the dark about them. Poppy has led a very sheltered and controlled life. She is not allowed to make her own decisions, she is not allowed to talk to almost anyone from the ruling class and she is not allowed to have fun and frivolity.

She has trouble following these rules. Poppy is conditioned to believe everything she is told and is told that the Ascended are magnificent beings chosen by her god and… that’s it. When we get the big reveal of what they really are, Poppy is shocked, and while a few contextual clues and loose hints may allow the reader to piece together a few guesses about them, it’s still pretty exciting.

I would like to point out here that there are TRIGGER WARNINGS in this book for repeated physical, mental and emotional abuse. These abuses are used to control and condition Poppy into the person the ruling class wants her to be. There is also off-screen violence against children, openly discussed proposals for sexual abuse, and repeated violence.

One of the most important stories in this book is the love interest for Poppy. Hawke, you could say that, wears the coat of many colors. His main job is to protect Poppy and she takes this position very seriously. It’s also her first sexual interest, and Hawke has no qualms about enjoying it. As the story progresses, he is also a big part of the plot twist in the second half, which I saw coming but was still a joy to read. I’m still on the fence about whether or not I like Hawke, but I honestly think that’s part of the point.

Overall, this book had a lot of the tropes common in fantasy novels, but the story was so captivating that I couldn’t care less. That’s the thing about tropes, when used well they can enrich a story, and Armentrout used them to their best advantage.

I was very happy about my first Armentrout book. The story caught my eye, was easy to follow, had enough twists to keep me on my toes, and was just plain fun to read. Was the book fun and entertaining? Yes. I could go on with pages on storylines, character development, and sexual tension, but most importantly, the book was entertaining.

From Blood and Ash sees Poppy the maiden suffer a lonely life away from the pleasures of society, hoping to fulfill a destiny never fully explained to her. Enter Hawke, a royal guard duty meant to protect her. Fate and duty soon mingle with desire and need. And all is not what it seems in Poppy’s world…

A strong and lovable main character with so much fighting and passion, Poppy isn’t afraid to break the rules that try to control her. Hawke is sexy, mysterious, and so swoon-worthy, but what’s even better is his attitude towards Poppy. He never tries to undermine her or take care of her. He embraces her strength and helps her develop. He always gives her a choice, which is very symbolic, especially if he doesn’t have a choice of hers in all other aspects of her life. Poppy and Hawke’s relationship is raw and fiery, and makes you feel like you’re the one on fire. This book is spicy, in the best possible way!

It all starts in the last 250 pages and we see two major plot twists: one that seemed obvious and anotherwhich was more surprising. I loved them both! Jennifer’s writing made it flow effortlessly! There are nice supporting characters like Viktor and Tawney and other characters like Kieran, Delano and Elijah that we are introduced to and we hope to see more of them in the next book, especially their humor. Then there are the characters that you just loathe. And there is a part of the book that is very satisfying!

The universe that Jennifer Armentrout created is one of a kind for her, and she paid close attention to detail in promoting it around the world. It got confusing at times and I still have a lot of questions about the world that Poppy and Hawke live in. Parts of the book were slow in places, but none of those points take anything away from the story, and it’s also the first of four books, so I know my questions will eventually be answered.

advantage:

Poppy as a strong-willed female character
Hawke… That’s right Hawke.
The spice! Slow and provocative with a satisfying climax
The construction of the world
The plot twists
The secondary characters

Disadvantages:

Slow at times
Confusion with some world buildings (but I know these will be answered)

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a fantastic fantasy novel that is her first foray into high fantasy. After finishing the book last night, I was thrilled because I loved every moment of this story and discovered that this is the beginning of a wonderful new series.

We meet our heroine Penellaphe (Poppy) from the beginning when she is secretly in a bar, hidden by a mask to watch the men and women enjoying each other’s company. Poppy does not have a normal life as she is the “virgin” who is the chosen one as it is her destiny to ascend to her place with the gods.

She has a year before leveling up and lives mostly alone with only her guards and her maid. Despite her circumstances, Poppy is a strong, intelligent and independent heroine and has been secretly trained by her main guard on how to fight and defend herself when necessary. As she hides in a room at the bar, she meets a handsome stranger who, in time, will change everything in her life.

Hawke, our hero, becomes one of the Poppy’s main guards when one of them is killed in the attack by Descenters who want to kill Poppy. Before long, Poppy quickly realizes that Hawke is the man she met at the bar. Hawke was a great character to fall in love with. He was determined to win Poppy over and nothing would stand in his way; even if he was very protective of her. He loved Poppy and Hawke together because there was chemistry between them. Poppy tries very hard not to fall for Hawke, as he constantly teases her and makes advances on her. Wonderful couple, but do they really have the chance to be together?

Armentrout does an amazing job with the construction of this world, with gods, kings, the mystery of ascension, as well as those who must wage war against those who must wage war, such as: B. Descenders, Atlantians, Cravens, Wolvens, etc. . I don’t want to say much more as it would be spoilers and that’s too good to spoil it.

From Blood and Ash is a riveting fantasy story set in a world of mystery, betrayal, suspense, action, mystery, passion, and a wonderful cast of fantastical characters. The last half of the book was overwhelming, with tense violence, Danger, constant action, heartbreaking and surprising twists. At the forefront of this story is this wonderful romance between Poppy and Hawke; that will change everything in Poppy’s life as she learns terrifying truths along the way. Who does she trust?

Kudos to Jennifer L. Armentrout for writing such an incredible fantasy that I was glued to my seat and couldn’t put the book down. From Blood and Ash was also a fun, entertaining and intense story that had a bit of everything. I’m so happy to learn that there will be another book, and possibly more in a series, that can’t be missed.
