More than fifteen years after its premiere, Grey’s Anatomy remains one of television’s most popular dramas and ABC’s greatest asset. It usually wins its timeslot and has been ranked in the top 20 most-watched prime-time shows for most of its seventeen seasons. It currently averages over eight million viewers per week.

It was also a cultural touchstone. It showcased the unique voice and vision of Shonda Rhimes; made Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh and T.R. surnames of gentlemen; and inserted words and phrases into the cultural lexicon, such as “McDreamy,” “serious,” and “you’re my person.”

And the behind-the-scenes drama was always just as juicy as what happened on camera, from Isaiah Washington’s controversial exit to Katherine Heigl’s fall from grace to Patrick Dempsey’s shocking death. The show continued to bleed key characters, but the popular hospital series never missed a beat.

Lynette Rice’s “How to Save A Life” delves deeply into the series’ humble beginnings in an entirely unauthorized way, offering exclusive insights into behind-the-scenes culture, the most heartbreaking games, and the most polarizing storylines. This hugely enthusiastic book is one that no Grey’s Anatomy fan should be without.

This is light-hearted reading for Grey’s fans (or ex-fans like me who stopped watching years ago but are still keeping up with the gossip), but it’s also a very clean, shallow retelling of a show that known for being dramatic. off the screen since it’s on.

At the end of the book, in the acknowledgments, Rice quotes a source as saying something like, “The real story isn’t being told because people like me won’t get on the record.” And sadly, that’s definitely reflected in this book. There are a few anonymous sources that provide quotes about the behind-the-scenes negotiations with the actors and point out the interpersonal drama, but most of this seems to come from pre-existing press interviews by EW or other publications. The new book interviews appear to be mostly from former authors and minor actors.

Katherine Heigl is probably most redeemed by the book, but very little time is spent discussing the interpersonal conflicts that led to the explosion of publicity and drama that culminated in the show’s third season.

There is no new information about Justin Chambers’ abrupt departure, even from veiled sources. And Patrick Dempsey’s exit section is just a retread of Rice’s article for EW. (Obviously, Dempsey’s exclusive interview is a career highlight for Rice, and I commend her for that, but I wish the book had gone deeper and gone beyond the publicist-approved message the actors and program wanted to convey.)

The oral history format seems like the wrong approach for a book that claims to be “the inside story,” especially when the interviews are heavily curated (or written in the same style) as the relationship-friendly writing you receive. EW, People or TVLine. Very few people seem willing to share the real truth, leading the reader to attempt to infer the real interpersonal dynamic at play.
