Although Laird Duncan MacLeish did not ride a white horse, he represents all that Lady Wilhelmina Redstone needs in her life. Broken and lacking in confidence, she agrees to her daughter-in-law’s plan to find a man who will love and protect her. Duncan, spying on the soulful-eyed lady on the balcony of Lyon’s Den, agrees to play the games Black Widow decrees, not realizing he has the winning ticket.
When he is introduced to Wilhelmina he no longer cares about the dowry she will bring into the marriage, everything in him calls for his protective instinct and he knows that Wilhelmina needs it on a basic level. Marriage isn’t easy, but Duncan gradually helps Mina bury her demons and deal with the past. An extraordinary encounter brings the restoration Minda desperately needs, and in Duncan her heart is healed again. Beautifully written and moving, I was moved by this novel and was reluctant to put it down when I reached the last page.
