The second book is just as gripping as the first, and the cliffhanger ending is just as annoying. Riva isn’t sure how the boys will take the demonstration of her newfound power, but she saved their lives. Now they must get to a safe place and regroup. But where is that? They try to find some of the “monsters” they were created to fight, but none of them seem to want to talk, they just disappear. Finally they should try it in Miami, where a monster supposedly owns a hotel. Then they meet Rollick.
Rollick is willing to try to help them, but first they need to better control their powers. But not all shadow children are as accommodating as Rollick, some of his minions would prefer the hybrids to be destroyed. Along the way, they discover that there are more beings like them. Now they have a new purpose: to find out where the Guardians keep them.
Meanwhile, Riva forgives some of the guys. But one still avoids his touch and another is still on his bad side. Rollick and his shadow spies find a few possible locations for the Guardian facilities and the group narrows them down to the most likely and plans a rescue mission. There will be a shocking surprise…
