I fell in love with Taylor Jenkins Reid’s writing when I first read her first novel, Forever, Interrupted, and have since read every book she has written as soon as I can get my hands on them. Needless to say, I pre-ordered their latest, One True Loves, and jumped in right after delivery. Once again, I was absolutely enthralled by the complex and emotional story it presented, one that not only made me excited to see how the characters would react to the seemingly impossible situation, but also made me wonder how I would react to the same situation .

I think the best part of the story (aside from the interesting dilemma it presented) for me was the time it took to fully develop these characters. I don’t think that without him, Emma’s love story wouldn’t have interested me as much and, apart from still being an entertaining story, it wouldn’t have had the emotional impact it had on me (like all of his books really). As it is, Reid creates these characters who are funny, flawed, emotional, and as relatable as they can get.

She then takes the time to really flesh out her relationships and experiences, which makes everything feel so much more relatable. Giving the reader a clear view of how Emma lived with and loved both men made it that much more complicated to decide (or figure out) who she would end up with. However, I knew who I wanted them to pick halfway through and I was a bit surprised at myself as it wasn’t who I originally thought I would have picked. I think that speaks to how much he made me invest in each of his lives.

While this is essentially a story about a woman figuring out which of the two loves in her life she should end up having, that’s not all this story has to offer. There’s a complicated relationship between Emma and her sister (one that most people with siblings can relate to), a look at how pain and adversity changes people, as well as the idea that you never know where it may lead you Life. This could include returning to the very places you are trying so hard to escape from. There are a number of interesting threads in the story that provide much to enjoy and ponder as the story progresses and long after it’s over.

I’m definitely a big fan of this author and would recommend her anytime. This was my second Taylor Jenkins Reid book. Now I am convinced that I love his books and must read them all. They read like chicks, but are a bit richer and are excellent for cleaning the palate. I would call it a “dessert book” because despite the heavy subjects they are fast paced and sweet.

One True Loves really won me over. Emma’s love for Jesse and Sam was so genuine that I was unsure which to choose. And that made me awful for her. If I felt bad about her choice, how must she feel? She’d spent three years dealing with the pain of losing her spouse, and now she had to deal with those traumatic feelings all over again, not to mention the pain of losing a loved one a second time, be it Jesse or Sam.

As the book progressed, I became more aware of who Emma should be with. I worried for a minute, would she see it that clearly? In the end, he did, despite making some questionable decisions along the way, even after making his choice. I’m actually a bit pissed off at the way it’s been handled, but then again, nobody’s perfect. I was literally stuck trying to make the best of a terrible situation.
