Silva was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When Silva was only 7 years old, his family moved to the Merced, California. He was raised Catholic.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from the California State University, Fresno and began a graduate program in international relations at San Francisco State University, but left when he was offered a job as a journalist at United Press International (UPI).

In year 1994 he began work on his first novel, The Unlikely Spy. The novel debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list on January 26, year 1997; it stayed on the list for five weeks, peaking at number 13. In year 1997, Silva left CNN to pursue writing full-time.

Since then, Silva has written another 23 spy novels, all New York Times bestsellers. Gabriel Allon, an Israeli art restorer, spy, and assassin, is the protagonist of all but three of Silva’s titles. The series has been the New York Times bestseller since its first installment in the year 2001.

Thirteen of the titles in the series are #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list (bibliography below). Some of his novels deal with Islamic terrorism, some with Russian villains, and others with historical events related to World War II and the Holocaust. Silva didn’t come into the Allon series with a significant understanding of the world of art restoration, but he was able to use a neighbor’s experience to help him transform a spy killer into an artist.

Silva met CNN special correspondent Jamie Gangel when they were both Middle East correspondents. They later married, and Silva converted to Judaism from Catholicism, his wife’s religion.

Elegant, sophisticated and artfully staged, Portrait of an Unknown Woman is a highly entertaining journey through the dark side of the art world, a place where unscrupulous dealers routinely cheat their clients and well-funded investors treat great paintings as if They were just another asset. class intended to be bought and sold at a profit.

From its humorous opening to the shocking twists and turns of its climax, the novel is a narrative feat and one of the best heist novels ever written. And it’s further proof that Daniel Silva is second to none when it comes to international intrigue and suspense.

Portrait of an Unknown Woman is the 22nd installment in Daniel Silva’s long-running series of spy novels starring Gabriel Allon. Set sometime in the present, it takes place after the Capitol Riots of January 6, 2021, an event that killed off its predecessor, The Cellist. Allon was in Washington D.C. that day. and survived a murder.

As Silva’s latest novel Portrait Of An Unknown Woman begins, Allon has retired as head of Mossad. He moved to Venice, Italy with his wife Chiara and his twin sons. Together they will work at the art restoration company where Allon worked, covertly under a pseudonym, for many years as the lead restorer of Old Master paintings.

The focus of the plot is the connection between art forgery and high finance. Allon’s friend Julian Isherwood recently sold a multi-million dollar Old Master. When he receives a handwritten letter that suggests the portrait might be fake, when the letter writer dies in an accident, and when he sometimes tries to run him over, he contacts Allon to investigate.

The more Allon searches, the more dangerous circumstances become for him and his friends. To catch an art forger, Allon becomes an art forger and sets in motion a series of events that lead to numerous scandals in the international art world.

Portrait of an Unknown Woman differs from Silva’s earlier novels in that Allon no longer works for Mossad. It has more the feel of a detective story than a spy story. However, despite the changing circumstances of Allon’s life, I enjoyed the novel and read it in a couple of sittings.

I read several series of novels, including the Harry Bosch stories by Michael Connelly and the Walt Longmire stories by Craig Johnson. As the characters age, the writers must determine what to do with them. I estimate that Allon will be at least 68 years old in 2022 and has been with Mossad for 50 years. This means that he is no longer capable of some of the physical feats of Silva’s earlier novels, none of which thankfully exist in Portrait. (Craig Johnson, attention!)

By the same token, though, it’s hard to see where Silva is headed from here. It can drag Allon back into the espionage game, make him a former private investigator (as in this novel), or go back in time to Allon’s earlier exploits at Mossad. If Silva sticks to his release schedule, we’ll know which path he’s taken by the summer of 2023.

I enjoyed Portrait of an Unknown Woman and look forward to Silva’s next novel. But given Gabriel Allon’s advanced age and retirement, I’m not sure how many more episodes this series has.
