Penelope Douglas is a bestselling author who writes romance novels, whether new to adult, erotic, or contemporary.

She’s not your typical romance novelist, she says there aren’t many topics too far off limits for her and she doesn’t like to stay in her comfort zone when she writes.

If you like your romance to be written in moral parentheses, the last sentence is a red flag for you. But… if you like a twisted romance with steamy scenes, Penelope Douglas is what you need.

Born in Dubuque, Iowa, USA, Penelope is the oldest of five siblings.

Penelope graduated with a Bachelor of Public Administration from the University of Northern Iowa because her father “just wanted to get the damn degree”! She disliked public administration, so she earned a master’s degree with a concentration in education from Loyola University in New Orleans.

Her books, which include The Fall Away Series, The Devil’s Night Series, and the stand-alone novels Misconduct, Punk 57, Birthday Girl, Credence, and Tryst Six Venom, have been translated into seventeen languages.

Although none of her books were made into movies, the rights to The Fall Away series were sold to a Hollywood producer.

Penelope Douglas is married and have a daughter named Aydan. When she’s not writing, she likes to visit old ships and go on road trips.

This is NOT the story of Jared and Tates, but the story of Madoc and Fallon. I want to make it clear that Rival is a completely different story than Bully and Until You. If you approach this book with that attitude, you’ll be ready for Madoc and Fallon.

Penelope Douglas amazed me again by writing Rival.

Rival begins with stepbrothers Fallon and Madoc. Madoc, Jared’s partner and accomplice in Bully and Until You, has a serious love-hate relationship with his half-sister Fallon. Fallon returns to town after a few years at boarding school and enters Madoc’s world. The poor thing doesn’t know which is up or which is down, and we find out what really happened to them all those years ago when Fallon abruptly left Madoc behind.

I really loved this book for many reasons: the dual point of view of the dialogue is really hard to do and the way Penelope writes really puts you in the head of her characters. I could feel her sadness, joy, tears, pain and anger. She let us see things through her eyes instead of just telling them, with monotonous internal dialogues as I have read in other books.

It was the perfect mix of dialogue and interior monologue without reading like a script. I LOVE that in a book. To me, that’s what makes a mediocre book great. I have seen a lot of growth in Penelope’s writing with each book. She gets better every time. I can’t figure out how she does it because how do you really get past perfection? She surpassed her previous books by her Bully and Till You Were That for Me and for Me Rival.

Madoc and Fallon were amazing individually and together. One paragraph made me want to slap Madoc across the face and the next I wanted to cry for him. Fallon…. Gosh, where do I start with her? she loved her she was lively, funny and very nice. My heart completely broke for her. The things she went through because of her nasty mother, oh, she never wanted so badly to crawl through a book just to strangle her. Fallon was so damn strong and I loved her.

She stood up for herself, but she was also vulnerable enough to let people in. Madoc made me faint more than once. He is such a nice character with the humor, style and damn ego of his. I really enjoyed Madoc and Fallon coming together as a couple. They had been through a lot and deserved the end they got.

I also enjoyed seeing Jared and Tate from a different point of view. I missed them and it was refreshing to visit them again. I also loved the twists and turns and…….JAX??!! the ending had my jaws on the floor. I love this guy. Some doubts I had in previous books were resolved in Rival. For example: Jared’s mom’s mysterious love interest. Where does she get some of his financial support from, etc., etc.?

I honestly couldn’t find anything that didn’t work for me. It had the perfect mix of sexiness and story without the need for padding. The hardest part for me was putting down the book to attend to life’s tasks, and I even sacrificed my dream to finish it. When I finished it was bittersweet because I didn’t want it to end. I’ve already read it several times. I’m really looking forward to reading Jax’s Falling Away book, which will be published in January 2015. I can’t wait to see what Penelope does with Jax and K.C. and see the whole gang together again.
