Camila Hassan lives a double life in the Rosario, Argentina.

At home, she is a loving daughter living within her mother’s narrow expectations, in the shadow of her would-be brother, and under the abusive rule of her hot-tempered father.

On the field, she is The Fury, a powerhouse of skill and talent. As her team qualifies for the South American tournament, Camila gets the chance to see how far these talents can take her. In her wildest dreams, she would get an athletic scholarship to an American university.

But the road is not easy. Her parents don’t know her passion. They would not allow a girl to play soccer, and she needs her permission to go further. And the boy she once loved is back in the town. Since he left, Diego has become an international star, playing in Italy for the renowned Juventus team. Camila doesn’t have time to let her feelings for him distract her.

Things are not the same as when he left: now she has her own passions and ambitions of her own, and La Furia cannot be denied. As her life becomes more complicated, Camila is forced to confront her secrets and navigate a world where the dreams and ambitions of a girl like her have no place.

Camila Hassan wants to be a soccer fan, a soccer star, even if the world is against her. Her parents don’t want her to play soccer but support her brother in her soccer ambitions. Camila’s childhood sweetheart turned soccer star is back in town and she’s trying to put him first and her dream second. What not everyone knows is that on the field, Camila transforms into La Furia, a fearsome force of nature that devours the soccer field with skill and ferocity.

She knows that she has what it takes to exceed everyone’s expectations, and she is not willing to back down for love or for the family’s expectations of her. Her only problem is that she has prevented her parents from playing soccer and her team qualified for a competition in which she needs her parents’ approval to participate. The Furia will not shy away from this challenge either.

Camila, also known as La Furia, is the star of this incredible story, so I want to talk about her first. Camila is an incredibly strong character who is so wild and not willing to let anyone benefit from her hard work or take credit for her. She works very hard to improve her soccer skills to reach her goal and I admire that determination. Her relationship with her brother was also very strong and I appreciated that he was going out of his way to help her.

Still, Camila doesn’t want to be saved by others, she wants to save herself. I loved how strong she was in defying her parents and achieving her dreams, even though her parents, especially her father, felt she should follow the path they had laid out for her. While I think it’s important for children to be there for their parents when possible, children also don’t have to live their lives in their parents’ image or just to cheer their parents on. Being a parent is not a free pass to control children because one day they will grow up to create their own future.

I loved the symbolism and the role that literature played in the story of La Furia. Camila talks about countless stories and poets from Argentina that open her eyes to the possibilities she can dream of and pave the way to pursue those dreams. She touched me when Camila passed this inspiration on to Karen, a girl she mentors so that another girl can find her own dreams and fight for them just like Camila.

The stories connect us and inspire us to reach into our hearts the dreams we dare not come close to and I was moved to see this so clearly in Camila’s life. Camila also longs to study and play soccer in North America, and it’s been really great to show that people love new places because they offer opportunity and potential, while also holding on to the good things about their homeland and culture. .

You know that feeling when you’ve barely finished reading a book and you already know you want to have it in all available formats? That’s what I felt when I read Furia . I couldn’t put this book down and read it in one sitting because it was so good! All books come to an end, but I would have liked to read countless more pages to stay with these characters. I wish I could have read Furia and other similar books growing up because their message is so wholesome.

Reading and knowing that it is okay to put yourself and your dreams above romance, family, and the whims and demands of other people is a powerful message that I think all teens (and some adults) should share in their lives to need . Too often women are expected to believe that love means sacrificing personal dreams and aspirations for the sake of the relationship, but these expectations do not have to match reality.

I think it’s great to see that stories where the protagonist chooses their dreams and ambitions over romance are becoming more and more common, not only in the Latinx community but in general. Too often, people are sold on the misleading fairy tale that life isn’t complete unless there’s a love interest, and that narrative isn’t true.

Furia is a powerful story of a girl who pursues her dreams no matter who she expects to compromise them. Each of us could take a page from the Furia playbook to make fewer compromises while shooting for the stars. Furia deserves my highest recommendation as a story about the empowerment, effort and determination to love yourself more than anything else and push yourself beyond your limits to make your aspirations come true.
