It’s a great story and I really liked it. I really liked Messner’s writing style and felt it flowed well and caught my eye.

The story begins with an American college student studying in England. She is studying history and has to get an interview for one of her courses with someone who survived World War II in London, specifically the Blitz. She is tasked with interviewing a woman who dies unexpectedly, and her teacher is able to put her in touch with Isabel at the last minute. She is warned that Isabel doesn’t like to talk about the war and her experiences, but she goes ahead with the interview anyway and hopes for the best.

Isabel begins to tell a story about two young sisters, Emmeline “Emmy” (15) and her sister Julia (7). The sisters live in London with her mother, who seems irresponsible and rarely around, leaving Emmy as the mother of her sister’s primary caregiver. Emmy has been designing wedding dresses for a long time and she loves coming up with new ideas and designs and sharing them with her admiring sister.

She often stops by a local bridal shop, looks in the window and dreams that one of her designs could come to life. One day, the owner of the bridal shop, Mrs. Crofton, offers her a job and her life changes. Mrs. Crofton recognizes her talent and mentions that she has a cousin who is a dressmaker and may be willing to help Emmy design clothes. Emmy is excited and full of hope for the future.

Just when Emmy thinks she might actually have a future designing and creating wedding dresses, her world comes crashing down. London becomes dangerous and all the children who live there are evacuated to the countryside. Emmy doesn’t want to leave and argues with her mother, but it’s clear that neither of them has a choice in the matter. Emmy’s mom tells her to take care of her sister when she gets on the train, and it’s clear that Emmy is used to taking care of her sister.

The two arrive in the country and are greeted by a kind woman, Charlotte Havelock, who is motherly and loving, and welcomes them to her home, Thistle House. She creates a wonderful home for the sisters and they both enjoy their time at Thistle House. However, Emmy receives a letter that offers her what she perceives to be the chance of a lifetime for her and she makes decisions that she will ultimately regret. Flash begins during this time and eventually separates from her sister and spends the next several years wondering what happened to Julia.

This story was an absolute page turner and piqued my interest. I enjoyed the way it was told and the regular return to the present when Isabel talks about her experiences. I would recommend this book to everyone!
