The opening part is a third person narrative describing “the girl” and “the boy”, two orphans and best friends. In the next chapter we jump forward and set about a decade later where we learn that “the girl” is Alina and “the boy” is Mal. They have stuck together all along and are now in the army with Bad as a soldier and Alina as a cartographer, although it must be admitted that she is not a very good cartographer.

Their friendship is important because it is the catalyst for the first major event in the book. The party you’re traveling with must venture into the Shadow Fold, aka Unsea (what a name, huh? Love it). Once inside, they are attacked by the Volcra, the nasty carnivorous flying creatures that are the only inhabitants of the fold. I’m not spoiling anything here because right there in the description it says that Mal is “brutally injured” and then Alina reveals the “latent power” of him.

Mal, her mapping work, and everything he had lived in the capital city of Os Alta were taken from her, to be trained as Grischa, Bardugo’s version of a mage/scientist of sorts.

She would normally write something like “and that’s where the fun begins”, but this book was so much fun from start to finish. I loved feeling the dynamic of Alina and Mal’s relationship early on. Mal is strong and caring and Alina is more in love with him, but he only sees her as a friend of hers. They actually tend to treat each other more like brother and sister, which makes for wonderful banter.

Even at first we are allowed to settle in this world resembling Russia. In my opinion the language is the best. Ms. Bardugo stated in an interview that she was careful not to use direct Russian words as Ravka is not Russia. In her place, she chose Russian sounds and Russian suffixes and mixed them with English words to create Russian-sounding nouns that the layman could still understand without knowing a lick of Russian.

One example she gave is that everyone addresses the Darkling as moi soverennyi instead of saying m’lord, which gives the word an authentic Russian tone while sounding close to the English root for “sovereign.”

Speaking of Darkling… Hoo, man. This is Bardugo’s message to all the good girls who want bad boys. He’s tall, dark, and has everyone around him shaking and scared at the same time, desperate to please him (and not just because they don’t want their lips sewn shut). But he and Alina understand each other.

They’re both the only Grisha of his kind (he’s a living enhancer and she’s a sun summoner; don’t worry, you’ll understand when you read the book), so they both feel weird. Add in the fact that Alina has always been a nobody and now she’s someone really important and you can see her starting to fall for the Darkling.

(Small confession: Every time I read the Darkling title, I think of those adorable talking slurs from Tamora Pierce’s Trickster’s Choice and Trickster’s Queen. You’d really enjoy them. They’re like pieces of happy, bite-sized morphs from Treasure Planet .)

Oh, hey, did I mention there’s a love triangle in this book? Not really. See, Alina likes both Darkling and Mal, but not at the same time, so she wasn’t as frustrating as other similar situations. At least it wasn’t for me. When we were introduced to both Darkling and Mal, I chose my guy and stuck with him until the end (but none of that stupid team-so-and-so thing).

Alina makes a few mistakes thanks to one of the guys, but she’s not stupid, flippant, or maddening like other girls (cough Bella and America cough). Actually, she was proud of the way she treated herself. He was also very proud of myself for staying with my boy because in the end he was right. And no, I won’t tell you who I chose.

The other characters were fun, although I didn’t feel like we knew them. I liked Genya, the friend of alina in the capital. His teachers were a bit stereotypical (a barbarian barbarian for a combat master, a sharp-tongued old woman for a charms master), but it was honestly a test to pay attention to someone else when you knew the delicious Darkling could take a ride on a horse. any time return to the scene. However, if I had to choose a secondary character that I adore (and there always is), I would choose David, Genya’s crush.

To be truly honest with you, I can’t think of anything I don’t like. has fallen. I’ve gotten so used to reading dark and scary books that this story felt a bit light, but I’m certainly not complaining. Some parts felt a bit lacking in action, but then I played other parts like the one that made me tweet the following:

All in all, it wasn’t a book I finished and I immediately wanted to give a copy to everyone I met (hello Grave Mercy). On the other hand, it was among the top five book It’s from my birthday list, and that’s a VERY hard list to crack. So I must stand up and congratulate the long line now forming in front of me from Mrs. Leigh Bardugo. Read the book so you too can stand in line.

Points added for: RUSSIA!, really cool language, Unsea (too often the “forbidden section” is based on Fangorn forest, so a sea is really cool!), David (so cute ), Mal and Alina’s friendship. , The Little Palace (what a grand and utterly realistic name is that?), Framing the Grisha stuff as a not-yet-understood science rather than magic.

Point deductions for: lots of unanswered questions (Which meadow? Wait, what happens next? WHAT MEADOWS?!), kind of mercilessly goofy about not being able to hit Grisha properly (David and Genya were the only two matched near your turn).

Good for fans of: Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me (love triangle and somewhat similar stakes), Bad Boys, Russia-based Worlds.

Parent Notes: A kissing scene, some scattered kissing, violence, some speech (I’m trying to remember… I remember a few A’s and a sob, but that’s about it).

One of the most original and fresh books I’ve read in a long time. Shadow and Bone is the story of two orphans, childhood friends who only had each other in the world. Now half grown (hence the young adult genre), Alina and Mal are traveling their country when something happens that will change the course of their lives forever.

Alina is kidnapped in the world of Grisha, where she meets the mysterious Darkling. Alina discovers that she has the ability to save the world and help her country win a war that has lasted over a hundred years. Now she has this great new life ahead of her, but Alina wants to go back to the old one with her best friend Mal. This new position in life confuses Alina as to where she belongs, even though everyone around her insists that they know she belongs to. the elite.

She would have put you far above the rest.
“Well, I don’t want to be above of others.”

The Darkling is a mystery to Alina, and most of the time she doesn’t know what to think of him or understand her motivations. However, the Darkling wants and tries to gain Alina’s trust.

“You are the first ray of hope I have had in a long time.”

I don’t want to spoil too much, but as you can imagine, not everything in Alina’s new world is as good as it seems. The farm where she resides is full of secrets and lies, but surprisingly, Alina is not put off by this, she just puts up with it (in my opinion). What I liked the most was the development of Alina’s character over time and how she began to understand that in order to truly become who she needed to be, she needed to reveal secrets and fears within herself. Alina went from being a shy and sickly girl to someone strong and willing to work hard to achieve great things.

With wit and a bit of humor, Shadow and Bone is one of those books that makes me kick myself for not reading it sooner.

“Where did you learn to fight like that?”
“Grischa training,” I whispered dramatically. “Ancient Secrets of the Groin Kick”.
