In 2019, Humans of New York featured a photo of a woman in an outrageous fur coat and hat that she made herself. She immediately caught the attention of millions. Her name is Stephanie Johnson, but HONY fans know her better as “Tanqueray,” a born performer who was once one of the most well-known burlesque dancers in New York City. Recovering from a brutal childhood immersed in a world of go-go dancers and crooks, corrupt cops and gangsters, Stephanie was determined to become the wildest thing the town had ever seen. And she was successful.

Real, raw, and uncompromisingly honest, this is the complete story of the Tanqueray as told by Brandon Stanton, a book packed with untold stories of Tanqueray’s struggles and triumphs in good times and bad, personal photos from his own collection, and insights into New York Town from the days when the name “Tanqueray” was on everyone’s lips.
