The Dilemma was an outlet for B.A. Paris to cross genres from the old three previously written psychological thrillers to the domestic family drama. It was just as entertaining and a quick read. The story was interesting and engaging and I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed this new approach. I have a personal favorite of B.A. Paris called The Break Down which I plan to read again over the holidays as it was a novel I remember not wanting to put down as soon as I read it I just picked up this one.

Adam has his own secret from her about Marnie, currently studying in Hong Kong, far from her London home, and Livia’s 40th birthday party. However, on the day of the party, a plane crash occurs in Cairo, killing all the passengers. the plane that Marnie was really supposed to be on. Her flight from Hong Kong was delayed, so there’s a chance she wasn’t on the plane, but Adam’s attempts to contact Marnie are unsuccessful.

Hoping for a miracle and unwilling to accept what he believes to be true, Adam is reluctant to call the airline’s emergency number to see if Marnie was on board. He also decides not to tell anyone, including Livia, until after the party, giving her this night of happiness before her world falls apart. However, keeping this secret, especially not knowing it for sure, is difficult for Adam, which affects his behavior before and during the party. The party itself brings its share of surprises, some more positive than others, adding to the stress Livia and Adam feel about keeping their respective secrets.

The author does a great job of depicting the inner turmoil Livia and Adam are feeling, especially Adam, and how it affects their interactions with each other, family, and friends. While most of the book focuses on the events of the day and night of the party, there are also sections covering the history of Livia and Adam’s marriage, the dysfunctional relationship between Adam and his son Josh, the development, and nature of the closest.

The relationships between Adam and Livia deal with friendships and the events that led Livia to discover Marnie’s secret. The Dilemma Livia and Adam face are difficult; I’m not sure what I would do if faced with her dilemmas about one of my children.
