I was a fan of B.A. Paris since I read his first closed-door thriller a few years ago. Seriously, if you want to read a great book, I recommend this. As soon as I see he has a new book, I immediately add it to my to-read list and buy it as soon as it’s published. That was the case with The Therapist, and it did not disappoint.
Alice and her partner Leo move into a house in The Circle, a London housing estate. When Alice meets up with her neighbors, she discovers that Leo never told her that her previous owner, Nina Maxwell, who was a therapist, was murdered in the house and that her husband Oliver, who ended up committing suicide, was charged. to murder her.
About twenty years ago, Alice’s parents and her sister Nina died in a car accident, and since then Alice has been obsessed with them whenever she meets another Nina. Such is the case with Nina Maxwell, and as she digs into Nina’s life, she discovers that Oliver may not have killed her. However, Alice’s neighbors don’t want to talk about it.
Although they don’t believe that Oliver killed Nina, they are willing to believe it since he committed suicide while being accused of murder. It’s much better to believe that Oliver did it than anyone else in his community. The more Alice digs and the more questions she asks of her, the more she discovers that all of her neighbors have secrets and that this community isn’t as perfect as it seems.
I loved that how Paris kept me guessing throughout this whole book. Just when I thought I might know what was going on and who killed Nina, she launched a curveball to head me in a different direction. I love it when an author keeps me on my toes and makes me suspicious of everyone in the book. No one in this community was above the suspicion, not even the Alice’s partner, Leo.
When Alice found out that Leo knew about the murder and didn’t tell her, she began to wonder if she could ever trust him again. And she began to examine it and found that it was not what she said it was. In addition to all the secrets and lies, strange things happen to Alice in the house. Sorry I can’t say what they are because that would mess things up. But she puts all this together and she has a reading that will boggle her brain.
We also get episodes from the past, which are a therapist’s point of view as she has sessions with a client. We don’t know who the therapist or the client is, and this adds to the mystery and suspicion of Alice’s investigation. Like Alice, she was everywhere and suspicious of everyone. At one point I thought I figured things out, but I was wrong. By the end of the book, when all was revealed, I was on the edge of my seat.
If you’re a fan of B.A. Paris or if you like books that make you guess, I recommend The Therapist, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
