I started The Friend Zone yesterday with a watermelon sundae (mixed with white wine) because I knew I was going to need it with this one.
I want to warn you before you decide to read this book. Kristen, the main character, has fertility issues, which is a major theme throughout the book, and if that puts you off, you might want to stay away.

Summary:
Kristen Peterson is a woman who tells it like it is, no drama, no nonsense. Except when it comes to his secret. You will undergo a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for you to have children. That’s why her military boyfriend is perfect for her since she doesn’t want children and he’s the only one who knows her secret. Kristen scheduled her procedure the week after her best friend’s wedding. At this point, her boyfriend will also officially retire from the military to help her get back on her feet. All she has to do is help Sloan with the wedding.

Joshua Copeland is Brandon’s godfather and best friend. Josh moves out after his messy breakup with Celeste, leaving her with the house and all her belongings while he deals with the bills. On his way into town he meets a beautiful stranger whom he thinks he will never see again. It turns out when he shows up at Brandon and Sloan’s house, he sees them again. She happens to be the maid of honor.

As Kristen and Josh grow closer, Kristen finds that he can match her sarcastic, sarcastic personality and always stays one step ahead of her hangry temper. Even his dog stuntman Mike, who hates his friend, loves Josh. The only problem is that Josh has expressed that he wants a family the size of a baseball team. Kristen knows she has to keep him at a distance because her attraction to him only grows, but she knows she can never give him what he wants.

Also, she’s in a relationship with a man who’s coming home soon, and she doesn’t need to feel guilty about not giving him children since he doesn’t want them anyway. He’s the safe bet. But the more time she spends with Josh, the harder it becomes to pretend she doesn’t have feelings for him.

I don’t even know where to start…this book was EVERYTHING. It was so beautifully written for a debut novel. I can’t wait to see what Abby Jimenez creates next. Kristen grabbed my attention from the start and I could immediately feel her struggle. There were many moments in this book where I laughed out loud because Kristen’s humor was so spot on. I always find interesting books where each chapter is told from the perspective of the other person.

Sometimes when an author does this, it distracts from the story. This was not the case here! Kristen struggles with her secret nobody knows, which affects her actions towards Josh. Josh thinks she does these things for different reasons, which means maybe she really isn’t that into him. There was much more to the story to be able to understand each person’s motivations, thoughts and considerations. I fell in love with both!

I rarely get upset when I read. Rarely. But this book…it made me cry so much I had to buy a donut because I wanted something sweet and comforting. This book rips the seams from your core. Such a powerful story of infertility, loss, love, heartbreak and plenty of humor to heal those wounds after Abby Jimenez broke open a piece of your heart. This will undoubtedly be my absolute favorite book of 2019. Please go read!
