Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend her wedding day with best man (and his nemesis), Ethan Thomas.

Suddenly, a free honeymoon is on the line and Olive will be doomed when Ethan enjoys paradise alone.

The pair agree on a temporary truce and head to Maui. After all, it’s worth being lucky for ten days to slip into the role of the newlywed lovers, right? But the weird thing is… Olive doesn’t mind pretending. The more she pretends to be the happiest woman alive, the more she feels like she could be.

Featuring the “extraordinarily hilarious and moving voice” of Christina Lauren (Entertainment Weekly), The Unhoneymooners is a romance for anyone who’s ever been unlucky in love.

Olive has always been unlucky twin, but her luck suddenly changes when her sister and her brother-in-law get food poisoning at their wedding and are unable to go on their honeymoon. Olive decides to take a free vacation with Ethan, her brother-in-law’s brother, whom she hates at first sight.

She hopes to spend her entire beach vacation avoiding him, but things get a little confusing when her new boss shows up. To avoid being caught taking someone else’s free honeymoon, she tells her boss that she is married to Ethan. But now she has to keep up the charade and pretend she’s madly in love with this man she hates, all the while trying to always remind herself in the first place why she hates him so much.

My thoughts

This book takes one of my favorite tropes (enemies become lovers) and gives it a new twist. This book is hilarious and there were a few spots that made me hysterical. The plot is fast-paced and the characters are absolutely lovable.

It was wonderful to read a romantic comedy where the protagonist is a woman who works in the field of science. Olive is a scientist, and while it’s not a critical part of the plot, it’s part of her, and it’s mentioned more than once. i loved that! In fact, I count this book as my book with a woman in STEM for the PopSugar Reading Challenge.

I really enjoyed the romance between Olive and Ethan. While some of the “twists” in the plot are predictable (as is the nature of rom-com, they will obviously end together. gasp Did I just spoil the ending?), I didn’t mind. For example, I knew Ethan didn’t find her as “disgusting” as she did him, otherwise this wouldn’t have made a very funny or romantic read.

Another thing I loved about this book was that it’s not just about the romance. Olive does a lot of soul searching throughout the book as she discovers a fatal flaw in her outlook on life and works to overcome it. The book isn’t just about her falling in love with someone else, it’s also about figuring out who she is and who she wants to be. She grows as a person throughout the book’s events, so it’s much more than just a romantic story.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and romantic read by the beach this summer.
