Colleen Hoover (Margaret Colleen Fennell) (born in December 11, year 1979) is an author of young adult fiction and romance.

In January 2012 she published her first novel Slammed. In December 2012, she published Hopeless, which topped the New York Times bestseller list. Many of her works were self-published before being picked up by a publisher.

Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulfur Springs, Texas, the son of Vannoy Fite and Eddie Fennell. She grew up in the Saltillo, Texas and graduated from the Saltillo High School in year 1998. In 2000 she married Heath Hoover, with whom she has three children. Hoover has a degree in Social Work from Texas A&M-Commerce. She worked in various teaching and social work positions before beginning her writing career.

In November year 2011, Hoover began her first novel, Slammed, with zero intention of publishing it. She was inspired by a songs lyric “decide what to be and go be it” from an Avett Brothers song, and “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise”. Because of this, she included the Avett Brothers lyrics throughout the story. After a few months, her novel was reviewed by book blogger Maryse Black and she was given a 5-star rating, and sales of her first two books increased rapidly.

Hoover published her first novel, Slammed, in January 2012 and a sequel, Point of Retreat, in February. They reached #8 and #18 on the New York Times bestseller list in August of that year. Atria Books picked them up and re-released them on August 10. A third book in the series, This Girl, was released in April 2013.

This book is so full of character, it’s beautiful. However, it doesn’t detract from the overall plot. I should mention that the character’s journey is the plot here; everything else that happens in the novel stems from a series of events/decisions that Merit makes. First, I’ve never read a book about identical twins, so giving Merit an identical twin is original. Making her the “smaller” of the two is really the beginning of the character-driven story.

Merit is a teenager who no longer goes to school and chooses to stay home and take a lot of naps during the day. She stops eating. After a mishap, she kisses her twin’s boyfriend and this causes a mutual crush between the two. Naturally, this makes her despise her seemingly perfect twin of hers. Also, she has to deal with her father who doesn’t procreate, her father’s mistress, a mother who lives in the basement, a brother who ignores her, a twin who seems to hate her, a foster uncle who confuses her even though she is her twin’s friend and boyfriend who moved in with her so now she has to ignore him all the time.

And right in the middle, Colleen plays something real. I don’t know how she does it. Many of her books deal with REAL problems like this. This differentiates her from other authors. YA and NA romance novelists focus solely on that with some character stuff. Colleen builds her characters around real-life themes and then sticks romance into them, which at first seems to be her main focus, but reading her books you can see the clarity in it.

I’m not going to say what the problem is that she’s seeing, lest anyone be spoiled, but I know it’s a real thing, and the way she’s portrayed here is so…real…it’s not obvious. first for us. , her or her family, but she’s there if you’re looking for clues. It comes out slowly but surely, just like reality often does. At the end of the novel she adds a resource link which I think is beautiful.

I think I’m crying now. I always forget how REAL and important Colleen’s books are. Not because they are amazing stories, well, not only because of that, but because they build a deep and meaningful story.

Getting back to the characters, I don’t want to go into too much detail because honestly, if you’re reading this and haven’t read the book, I want you to be totally surprised by everything that happens. Experience how the Voss family opens up to you on the pages like they did to me.

Sagan is basically a perfect character. We leave it there. Her romance is slowly building, of course, but it’s perfect nonetheless. It’s a cute build that even while it’s being built, the book still focuses on the character of Merit and the members of the Voss family. I just remembered how many times he kisses her on the head. They really are the sweetest loving kisses.

What else is there to say about the book that hasn’t already been said? I could go on, but I really want every reader to experience Merit’s journey with her without spoilers spoiling the fun. This was an amazing read and I will never regret reading it. She hits you somewhere deep, digs in and refuses to leave.
