Kanemille, son of Odysseus the Elder, was imprisoned years ago for murdering his shellan. He really doesn’t remember much about it, but he knows he didn’t do it. During his detention, he is cared for by prison camp nurse Nadya. It’s Nadya who keeps Kane through the toughest times.
When Kane is released from the last prison camp, he is on the verge of death. The wolves that helped him escape take him to his Gray Wolf, a mystical leader of his people. He has a choice: stay alive to free Nadya or go to his shellan in the void.

Of course, life has a price and Kane pays it without knowing what is happening to him, even though others around him are doing it. He wants to go back immediately to get Nadya out of jail, but he is no longer the vampire that he was.

This book was non-stop action from the first pages and I loved it. Even when the plot slowed down enough for this reader to catch their breath, things happened. It was a super fascinating roller coaster when Kane and Nadya got back together.

They have the help of other vampires and wolves, and the relationship between Callum, one of the wolves, and Apex, a vampire, is particularly interesting. I hope we find out what happens to them.

As much as this book is non-stop action, a beautiful love story unfolds between Kane and Nadya. Both have been badly burned by the traditions of Glymera. It’s gratifying to see true love triumph in this book. There is a connection between Kane and Nadya that cannot be denied.

I loved this story. It is a love story full of longing and sacrifice. It is wrapped in a thrilling liberation story tied to the King and the Black Dagger Brotherhood. There are some short scenes with Vishous and Payne that were entertaining and offered some relief from the constant struggles of the ex-prisoners. There were also some lovely moments when Kane got used to new technology, like driving, which also offered a little relief from the sticky situation they always seemed to find themselves in. Everything was perfectly balanced for this reader.

I really love what JR Ward is doing with the wolf and The Viper sealed the deal for me on that. Kane’s transformation is disturbing at first, then horrifying, until Kane is able to get his revenge on the prison camp boss in a highly satisfying scene of carnage.

The Viper works well as a stand-alone book and you don’t need to read any of the other books in the Prison Camp series to enjoy this one. Kane and Nadya’s love story is touching and sexy and I loved the two of them together. And there were a ton of unanswered questions that left me drooling for more. Also highly recommended for BDB fans and newcomers.
