The world building in Theft of Swords is relatively limited, but it works great for building the story and amazing characters. It’s pretty much the basic Tolkien world with humans, elves and dwarves, but there are some interesting facets involving racism towards the other races. For the most part, humans are now the dominant species, and while not all elves live on human lands, there are many half-breeds who are treated as second-class citizens, just above slaves.

There are also some interesting sections where the Church of Novron claims they don’t have souls, so it’s okay to rough them up as much as you want. Among the dwarves, they are superior to the half-elves, but not by much, and really only because they are excellent craftsmen. There is magic in these books, but it’s not too extensive, especially in Theft of Swords. The use of magic is based on the sorcerer’s will and the art of molding that will with the hands and some ritual words.

In the first half of the book, the only magic we see is that of the 1,000-year-old prisoner Esrahaddon, who, still with his hands severed, beckons the heroes of this story to help him escape his prison frozen in time. In the second book, the magic mostly comes from the mostly invulnerable magical construct that somewhat resembles a dragon. I found Gibralym’s main idea (can’t remember the spelling) indestructible a bit silly as with their existence in the previous era, especially when there were hundreds of them. I don’t know how the humans could have lined up. are.

Still, the concept of just having a sword marked with the beast’s name in elvish, being able to damage it by scattering it led to some really exciting and terrifying plot twists. I’ve only had two problems with world creation, and both are relatively small and inconsequential. The country seems really small with its travels between the big cities and a city at the end of its territory that borders very close to the forbidden territory of the elves to last only a few days.

The other was the monetary system, where his huge and dangerous quest in the first book only cost 10 or 15 gold, but in the second half, a sleepover for his young employer complete with food and a makeover cost 90 gold. silver (and she gave them 1 gold). I know it was just meant to be fun and show her character, as the young lady gave them her life savings of 60 silver, but even before they took the job, they had already spent more than that on them. .

It just doesn’t make sense though, mainly that 100 silver pieces would make 1 gold (plus I guess 100 coppers would make 1 silver) and that they weren’t really getting paid well for their jobs. None of those things really made a difference to the quality of the book, but I just remember them bothering me a bit.

The story is a bit simple, but it is very effective and entertaining. In both halves of the book, Royce and Hadrian are hired for a seemingly simple job (one of them pays very well, the other really pays nothing) that ends up being way over their heads. On the journey itself, the book shines, especially when it comes to the characters, from the main characters to the supporting cast to the villains, all of whom are very well done. I loved that Royce and Hadrian are two unique people with vast experience and have a great bromance in this book.

As far as character development, a lot of the smaller characters (at this point) definitely go through a lot and grow accordingly, but the development of Royce and Hadrian was very interesting. As they are both older and have grown quite a bit over the time of this book, their character development comes from the author showing the backstories of the two characters bit by bit, and I found it extremely effective.

In the end, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who can read as I truly believe that people from very different backgrounds will continue to enjoy this book. Also, the author is a very nice guy and the main reason he wanted it published was to reach more readers. He probably made more money as a freelance writer before Orbit hired him. So if he hasn’t read this book yet, he really should get it and start enjoying the characters and the world that Michael Sullivan has built here.
